David K. Shipler in his essay At the Edge of Poverty talks about the forgotten America. He tries to make the readers feel how hard is to live at the edge of poverty in America. Shipler states “Poverty, then, does not lend itself to easy definition” (252). He lays emphasis on the fact that there is no single universal definition of poverty. In fact poverty is a widespread concept with different dimensions; every person, country or culture has its own definition for poverty and its own definition of a comfortable life.

A couple of my teammates accompanied me and we drove to Lyari. We had to park our car outside as the roads in the city were too small for a car. As we entered the city we noticed that people lived in small homes. Homes with thatched roofs and walls made of manure and sticks. Generally, majority of the town was uneducated, without proper shelter, no electricity, no vehicles and no access to clean water. It was so moving to see how these people had so little in material things and yet they seemed to be at so much peace with their life burdens. There were young children everywhere either completely naked or just in their underwear but what stood out the most were the smiles on their faces while playing in the same dirty water used for washing clothes and showering themselves. They were completely incognizant to what was going on around them. Such an environment made us realize that all we care about in life is having fun, while those in other countries are just trying to stay alive. Me and my friends gave the little children some money and gave our jackets and shoes to those children. The young poor children considered our donation as a great act of kindness and would never forget this day. In America, illegal immigrants are bounded by the dreams of reaching the top of the ladder of luxury, but reality comes in and kicks them down to the ground of poverty. In Shipler’s book, The Working Poor: Invisible in America, he addresses the fact that illegal immigrants are not receiving the equality that they deserve, but they are being treated as slaves only to enter the country to work harder than most Americans and be paid half as much. Illegal immigrants should be paid equally for their work, and they should be given rights equal to that of other Americans.
In the Working Poor, David Shipler shows the different levels of poverty in the United States. Although many people work every day they still do not have enough money to live their lives comfortably or contently. In chapter 1, Money and Its Opposite, discuss the different people that worked hard their entire lives only to remain in or below the poverty line. For instance, in the book Shipler speaks of the disadvantages that the working poor are susceptible to. Often being taken advantage of from employers that do not give accesses that they are entitled to, the working poor are more likely to be audit than the wealthy, and become victims of cons that point toward money for a small payment, first. Shipler performs an amazing job with describing the factors that play their parts into the lives of U.S. citizens who live are poor and within poverty.
The lie of the American dream is that it promises to fix humanity's problems with material gain – it promises happiness from things that are not capable of giving it. And so, followers are all left unfulfilled by the great American dream, left with a reality that is much different than what was so easily guaranteed. The reality that everyone experiences, whether it is the suburban soccer mom or the tired immigrant, is that the dream is mostly unachievable. Insular poverty, elucidated by Professor John Kenneth Galbraith in his 1969 essay, The Position of Poverty, refers to the collages of people who are poor because the designation of their lives trap them on ‘social islands’ where nearly everyone is living in these standards. (Galbraith 404) Poverty has flagrantly become a ‘back of the mind’ subject in America. The underlying question remains; is American society responsible for the uprise of insular poverty? I’ve grown up in a country where ignoring the levels of poverty and the lack of justice is somehow impossible. Today poverty is one of the most complex issues the world is facing. I’ve been witness to hundreds of people that have been trying to improve the situations in Colombia. Most of those people are worldwide known and are international leaders, such as Shakira, Falcao, Alvaro Uribe. I’ve collaborated with the community who has a lack of resources in some occasions. Every year my family will donate clothes and some money to a foundation that will help people with needs. I helped with the cleaning of an old house that the school is planning on turning into a school for people with little resources in the region. Also last year I had the opportunity to go to a poor region outside of Antioquia. We were a group of girls lead by some nuns, and the purpose was to gather people from all town to spend the afternoons with us. We realized activities for people of all ages, it was an stupendous experience. I wish I could give more to the world and especially to the countries that are really being affected by poverty issues. In “How The Poor Are Made To Pay For Their Poverty” Barbara Ehrenreich argues the poor are getting exploited for their poorness not only is it the creditors and businesses it is also local government that are syphoning off money of the poor. In Jonathan Kozel’s “Preparing Minds For Market” he’s research how public schools are now leading students down a particular path of careers and marketing systems set up for just this purpose. In both essays, there are examples that the poor or less fortunate are trapped by local government and businesses and put in situations they can’t get out of which is a cycle that seems unbreakable if you don’t know the traps they set.

David Shipler is an accomplished writer and consultant on social issues. His knowledge, experience, and extensive field work is authoritative and trustworthy. Shipler describes a vicious cycle of low paying jobs, health issues, abuse, addiction, and other factors that all combine to create a mountain of adversity that is virtually impossible to overcome. The American dream and promise of prosperity through hard work fails to deliver to the 35 million people in America who make up the working poor. Since there is neither one problem nor one solution to poverty, Shipler connects all of the issues together to show how they escalate each other. Poor children are abused, drugs and gangs run rampant in the poor neighborhoods, low wage dead end jobs, immigrants are exploited, high interest loans and credit cards entice people in times of crisis and unhealthy diets and lack of health care cause a multitude of problems. The only way that we can begin to see positive change is through a community approach joining the poverty stricken individuals, community, businesses, and government to band together to make a commitment to improve all areas that need help.
