Racial Profiling Research Paper Racial Profiling is the process of judging individuals based on skin color in a systematic way. It is like ordering ice cream based on the color and not the flavor. Racial profiling is an essential tool in our efforts to protect ourselves,however, it violates an individual's rights and should never be tolerated. Racial profiling is common among African Americans. In the article "Black men in public spaces", Brent Staples shares a personal narrative about how people view black men, moreover, himself, and how it makes him feel. It all started out when Staples was walking late one evening in a rich neighborhood. There was a white woman walking directly in front of him. When she turned around and saw Staples, she started to walk quickly. After taking a few more looks at Staples the lady ran . Throughout Staples life he had encountered many issues with being stereotyped. He shares multiple experiences in which people had been afraid of him and suspected him to be a rapist, mugger, criminal etc. He was unsure why he was perceived this way, but then he thought it was because of his color. Although, he did not participate in any gangs and he was one of the good boys, people still feared him. Staples did not want people to be afraid of him anymore so he changed his appearance and his routine of doing things. He wore business clothes and he took precaution during his evening walks, and lastly he started humming and whistling Beethoven. After the changes of his appearance people were less afraid, and he felt better of himself for not being looked at as a criminal because of his color. Unfortunately, after 9/11 Racial Profiling has become a huge problem not with just African Americans, but more minoritie... ... middle of paper ... ...filing. Some may believe racial profiling is a crucial weapon in our efforts to protect our country. Racial profiling is the process of judging individuals based on skin color in a systematic way. Some believe that racial profiling is beneficial because it protects us, however, it violates an individual's rights and it should never be permitted. Racial profiling has been a huge problem for many different ethnicities and with such problems something should be done about it to ensure that this issue will not affect us in the future.
