Annu Devi, 22 years old female got married and gave birth to a beautiful daughter. In 2014, on January 30, after 3 years of her marriage, she and her 1-year-old daughter burned alive and killed by her husband and his family. Investigation suspected the reason of that event is related to dowry. According to Devi’s parents, Devi was abused by her husband and his family for more money and other things. This incident happened in Jharkhanda, India. (Singh, 2014). This event is heart breaking. If Devi was taught to fight for her rights, if she and her parents had spoken about the abuse at the time when her in-laws were abusing her for more money, this event could have been prevented. She could have confronted the situation and fight for her right, if she was taught and given opportunity to be empowered. This is just a one scenario. CNN report (2014) said, India had over 8,200 dowries related death in 2012. To overcome the gender inequality, empowerment of women is the most important and effective solution.

Discrimination against women is not the new topic in India. From the history Indian women were treated as secondary members of the family and society. Cultural beliefs, patriarchy practice and socioeconomic factors are some causes of gender discrimination against women in India. Some common beliefs that influence this discrimination are, only sons can participate in the funeral rituals, otherwise the soul of the dead body will never rest in peace; only sons can carry the family name and continue the existence of the family etc. Some other causes of sons’ preference are need of son to heritage the property, culture of ...
