A Brief Analysis of Charles Dickens and His Writing

Charles Dickens is among some of the great fiction authors of the Victorian era. He was more than just a writer nevertheless; he inspired changes throughout the world with the use of writing. For a man to come from his childhood scenario to where he developed could be seen as amazing, but really his struggles are the blessings for his success. Charles Dickens was inspired by the struggles of the poor and the oppressed, his writing caused societal changes, and he used fictional people and events to represent the real world.

During the Victorian Era in Britain there was a severe gap between the rich and the poor. The poor were often forced to work in dangerous circumstances to avoid debtor’s prison. Children had to start working very young to support their families. There was almost no chance of moving up in social class if you were born poor. Charles Dickens dealt with these problems himself. Experiencing life this way helped him understand and have great compassion for the poor and oppressed.

Charles Dickens’ was on his own trying to support his needy family at a very young age. When Charles was 12 years old his father was sent away to debtors prison along with his wife and five of his six kids. Charles was forced to get a job at a working house to try and pay off his family’s debt. When Charles was alone he had to do anything he could to even have a meal. This early experience was traumatic to Charles and it affected the way he viewed the poor later in life.

Charles Dickens’ mastery of the fictional character gave him the power to illustrate his message in a much greater way. From Oliver Twist to Ebenezer Scrooge Dickens’ characters were all created to represent a higher issue. Some characters are so deep that even today we do not understand totally what they might mean. Dickens is one of the greatest writers of all time when it comes to creating fictitious characters.

Charles Dickens was motivated by the hardships of the poor and the oppressed, his work caused social changes throughout England, and he used fictional characters to embody the real world. Charles Dickens the author was a very inspirational to many people throughout the ages. His works have been critically acclaimed across the world. Charles Dickens’ affect on the world during the Victorian Era is unparalleled even to this day.
