7 Habits Essay
"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey outlines seven main beliefs that he believes individuals need to focus on in order to become highly effective. “Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily express our character and produce our effectiveness…or ineffectiveness.” (Covey 46)
The seven habits Covey summaries in the text are Be Productive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win/Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw. He describes how adopting these seven habits teach one to be their true selves, to be authentic, to live with self-respect, and to do things with honor. He emphasizes that it is necessary to identify the interdependence that individuals each required with the specific skills it takes to become highly effective. The authors’ intent is to empower persons to significantly enhance their routine competency through awareness by embedding these seven habits.
Habit One
“Be Proactive,” is when one takes initiative for their life, they own up to whom they are, and what they do. Proactive individuals not only take initiative, but they are aware that they are responsible for the choses of the behavior they choose. “Our basic nature is to act, and not be acted upon.” (Covey 76) Reactive people are the opposite of proactive individuals as they do not take the responsibility for their performance, and find others or things to place blame on their actions. Stephen Covey’s seven habits are life-long principles that if we must cultivate to become a part of our day-to day thinking, which eventually become daily thoughts and words, which then becomes daily actions, and eventually leads to daily habits, that become your passion. The best investment anyone can make is an investment in them; we must first distinguish and understand how to do so, and take the appropriate actions. “Obviously building character of total integrity and living the life of love and service that creates such unity isn’t easy. It isn’t a quick fix.” (Covey 318) With the knowledge I have learned and retained from reading this book, I have begun my transition to becoming a highly effective person.
