“When we think about school violence, events like Columbine come to mind. Looking back at the incident, Andy Carvin for The Digital Beat reminds his readers that one of the killers, Eric Harris, had his own web site that contained "conspicuous threats against fellow students". It was brought to the attention of the police and led to both Harris and Klebold being questioned about the incident and was an early example of what is now called "cyber bullying” (Keith & Martin, 2005). Cyber bullying is defined as it is. Technology has currently expanded over time and with time students have more access to social media sites and it’s at these sites where the cyber bullying is formed. Some cons to cyber bullying are suicide, harm to self, hurt feelings and bullying back. This would apply to school bullying as well. Both forms of bullying can potentially lead to children having mental disorders, low self-esteem, and a form of early addiction. “An increasing number of young kids are falling into a depressive state, and sadly, committing suicide as a result from cyber bullying” (Cornell & Limber, 2015). The abuse is so severe and certain that they feel it is their only way out. Young adults and kids are very vulnerable to criticism and unkindness because they are still unsure of themselves. Since cyber bullying doesn’t occur in the school, many schools do not do anything about it. Several reasons people are for bullying are, children being able to stand up for themselves. A lot of times people feel that it’s a dog eat world and we have to teach children that bullying may arise at a different times in their lives. With cyber bullying children are more likely to stand up for themselves because the bullying is happening via the web and they are also in the comfort of their home. It can also happen during school, but the odds of children standing up for themselves are very slim. Another benefit to cyber bullying is that once it’s in writing and exposed online, you can’t take it back. I’m sure you can delete some things but however law enforcement will still be able to recover any items that may have been discarded. Parents are able to see who is doing the bullying and they can potentially prevent it from getting nasty and out of hand.
