The act of bullying has been present in children’s life throughout time. It has been seen in movies, books, and even real life situations. In recent years there has been in increase in the use of technology and the Internet. As a result a new type of bullying has been introduced to today’s generation of teenagers. Clemenit’s roommate during his freshman year at Rutgers University, Dharun Ravi, used a webcam in September 2010 to stream footage of Clementi kissing another man. According to the Tyler Clementi Foundation, the teenager learned through his roommate’s Twitter feed that he had become “a topic of ridicule in his new social environment.” On September 22, 2010, Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge”. Cyberbullying is when someone uses technology to threaten, harass, embarrass, or target another person publicly (New, 2012). The technologies that are starting to be used are no longer just computer, however, has expanded to phones, tablets, and even game systems (New, 2012). By definition, cyberbullying is used to describe the misuse of technology between children (New, 2012). The definition of cyberbullying is not interchangeable when referring to adults and children. When an adult misuse the internet to hurt others, this is considered as cyber- harassment or cyber stalking, which can lead to jail time, if found guilty (New, 2012).

Cyber bullying can be defined as “the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person,” (Merriam-Webster, 2012). This form of bullying can come through various mediums including but not limited to text messages, emails, videos, and social networking sites. There is an overwhelming amount of information that defines cyber bullying, identifies the demographics of bullies and victims of cyber bullying, and identifies the outcomes of cyber bullying on victims. More focus needs to be placed on who the perpetrators of this form of violence are and how this form of violence is linked to traditional bullying. This will allow researchers and practitioners to move forward with research and implementation preventative methods and intervention once the problem has already occurred.
We have all been a victim or witness of cyberbullying. If you haven’t, it will most likely happen at some point during your life. We know that cyberbullying has had numerous impacts on people, but did you know that bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide? Most victims of cyberbullying have had suicidal thoughts atleast once if not more times. About 58% of kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them online. More than 4 out of 10 say it has happened to them more than once. This statement tells you that more people have been cyberbullied than you think. Some people believe that cyberbullying is not a major problem and that many people don’t experience it but they are wrong. Cyberbullying is a major problem within our society that has had a negative impact on teens and young adults and needs to come to an end.
