Understanding Leadership

In order to write a paper on the “leadership development” I had to put a deep effort in understanding the phrase. To understand it more vaguely I also took a class of leadership held in my college as it was going to help me in the expansion of my professional life as well. The course of this class would help the students to learn how leaders could be developed and how can they develop the leadership within them. While taking the course I had several questions in my mind like what qualities should lead you towards better leadership? What feature will dominate the process of leadership? Can I create my own leadership style or would I have to follow some set of rules.

I believe that environment, edification and atmosphere plays a certain and vital role in the formation of a person’s leadership management. But these qualities are like external forces. They can’t change the inside of you. My own perception was that leaders cannot be made instead they are born that way. But after spending part of my life here in the university I understood that following certain principles can make you very competent and effective leader rather than having it as an inborn characteristic. To understand the concept of leadership you will have to understand the correlation between a leader and the one who is being led. To become a proficient leader it’s not only important to know about efficacy of leadership but also what the inadequacies of it are.

There are three elementary ways of becoming leaders according to Bernard Bass (1989). He explains imprecisely the three points; the third one being extremely important.
