Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. The leader must be effective and successful in creating a strong institution. Social workers have play an important role in the community. They work hard in order to assist those in need. Social Work defines leadership as “the capacity to work creatively, constructively, and effectively with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to promote social justice, catalyze social change, and address individual and social problems. Everyone has a different definition of what makes someone a leader. My definition is not a statement of requirements, but more so a list of characteristics. I believe it takes a strong, independent, dependable, open-minded, thoughtful, selfless, smart and creative, someone who can work well with others, able to work under pressure, respectful, and experienced individual to be a leader. I believe it is someone who knows who they are and know their morals, someone who has already found who they are in life and accepts who they are, making what I believe the most important characteristic is, is someone who knows and sticks with their personal values. If someone cannot respect values and stick to their word, then how can they be a leader of others? A leader takes a lot of work, but if you are good at it, it may seem like nothing. Some people are leaders and do not even know it, like role models. When little kids look up to certain people that have impacted their lives in a way, they will see those people as role models. Truth is, leaders are everywhere and not everyone knows or can see that. It's not always the person who stands out for taking control or being bossy, but the one with the characteristics and high values that do the right things, even when no one is watching.
There are two types of people in this world: those who lead and those who follow. A leader is nothing without its followers though, so which type of person really is more important? Nowadays leadership is determined, not by authority, but instead by influence. So in order to take the first step towards becoming a successful leader you need to first appeal to those around you and gain followers. Once you have followers, set a goal for the group, because how effective a leader you are is measured by your ability to achieve these goals.

The concept from this module that was most important to me was intellectual stimulation as it relates to transformational leadership. This concept is important to me because I value my subordinate’s ability to think creatively and want them to feel comfortable with sharing their ideas within the work center. Normally when I am asked to make a decision that will affect my team, I use my own knowledge and experience to make a decision that I think will be best and implement it with little outside input. I do the same thing when assigning a task and describing how it needs to be completed. There are many different things I think of when I think of what leadership means to me. My idea of leadership is to be able to inspire others, get them excited to do something, motivate them and set an example to others. I also think that showing respect to others is a key part of leadership. You don’t just need leadership qualities, but you need to be a successful leader. To me being a successful leader is being able to have people follow you and not disrespect you. If you are a great leader your followers start to respect you more. This article focused on what leadership is like in social work, how the role of leadership can influence policy and shape professional futures, and how individual social workers can become leader and how to demonstrate leadership. It starts off by talking about how social work has not only been less proactive but more reluctant than other professions to take on leadership roles. It concentrates on two forms of leadership in the social work profession; transactional leadership and transformational leadership. Transactional leadership has an emphasis on exchanges between leaders and followers. Transformational leadership stresses the importance of promoting organizational change and focuses on the future instead on the right now (McDonald, 2009).

Lastly, leaders drive projects and people to the finish line. They are like freight trains, unstoppable forces that will breakthrough any obstacle that gets in their way. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they plough through people that get in their way. A good leader will push teamwork rather than individual achievements. They compliment members of the group under their care in order to motivate team members and get them to buy into their plan.
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them.
