High schools start too early in the morning, causing many students to be tired, and unfocused throughout their school day. This causes problems in how well students can learn, as well as their general health overall. Early school starting times should be moved forward one hour, in order to promote students health, and ability to learn. As of now, many high schools start around 7:30 AM, which is too early in the morning, when most teenagers are not ready to go to sleep until 11:30 PM. Teenagers go to sleep later because their biological clock is set an hour later. "In subsequent studies, Carskadon showed that puberty alters the biological clock, programming teenagers to fall asleep about an hour later than they did earlier in life and to sleep later in the morning" (Lamberg). Since teenagers sleep later at night, and into the morning, a later school starting time would allow teenagers to get extra sleep, and be more prepared for school. There are many benefits that have been found to come with later school starting times. Students are more alert, ready to learn, and are healthier with later starting times.

Or, is the student’s hatred toward school because it starts way too early in the morning. You can say this because after the delay in school time started, the attendance went up which means that students wanted to show up at school. Students also felt that they were not as depressed as when the middle school starting time was earlier. You may be thinking that if the school time is delayed, children may start staying up later at night. This is not really true because going to school is a lot of work and it also requires a lot of homework to be done. Most students are tired by the end of school, and even more tired after they are done with all of their homework. Children will definitely want to go to bed early to get a full night's rest, this is because students will take advantage of this since school starts early in the morning. Even if they do go to bed late, it would probably be because of after school activities and a lot of homework, not because the children wanted to stay up late on purpose. But it could also improve grades, abilities and motivation. Beginning school later makes the difficult job of waking up in the morning effortless and enjoyable.

Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
