Should High School Students Start School Later In The Day?
A lot of people wonder whether or not school should begin later in the day for high school students. Letting teenagers get more sleep is a solid reason as to why school should start later, however there are many more important facts that suggest students should continue to have an early start on school. High school students should not start school later in the day because of complications concerning students’ schedules and transportation methods.
High schools should not start later because it will make transportation difficult. Starting later would be extremely expensive for schools. The bus schedules for districts rely on the early morning opening bells, and making just a little change for the school bus schedule can cost the school a lot of money. Community life revolves around school hours, and any change can interfere with people’s regular schedule and plans. Ending school later makes sport practices, clubs, or extracurricular activities late. It can also interfere with students’ jobs. Even in the article, Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later For Teen’s Health, it expresses the difficulty that comes with having high schools start later: “Letting teenagers sleep later typically means an earlier start for elementary schools, and sets off a cascade of adjustments. Teachers have to change their schedules, times shift for after school activities and jobs…” If students have trouble making time for a job or sport, how are they going to fit in time for homework and studying? This defeats the purpose of starting school later in the first place, the purpose of giving teenagers more time to sleep.
