Recommended: Benefits of a later start time in schools

Should school start later?
How would you feel waking up when it is still dark outside? Wouldn't you want to get the recommended hours of sleep to feel well rested, more focused and to be more healthy. In doing this you can show your best abilities at school. That's why we need to start school later to get the recommended hours of sleep to prevent all the things we feel in the morning. School start times should be later because kids will be more rested, more focused and more awake to drive safer.
Schools should start later because kids will be more well rested? National sleep foundation states, “teens need significantly more sleep than adults to support their rapid mental and physical development.”(National sleep foundation 1) This quote …show more content…

Amanda Macmillan says “crash rates fell by 16.5% in the two years after a school district shifted its start times an hour later, compared to the two years before.” (Macmillan 1) This quote is saying that less crashes happened when school start times started later. This means if school were later there would be less crashes when it is lighter out. As a general rule driving in the dark is not always the safest, what if your lights go out and you can’t see. Some people may say starting later could still cause crashes to occur. Well if school was later to where it is light outside this would not be as big of a problem. There is a lot more things such as animals that people can not see when it is dark as fast as when it is light out. National safety council says “the risk of a fatal crash is three times greater at night.”(National safety council 1) This quote is saying that crashes are more likely to happen when it is darker or at night time. This means if we go to school later it will be lighter outside then now when it is dark and less crashes will happen. As a general rule driving in the dark is harder to see then driving in the light. If we were to go to school later when it is light outside there would be less crashes/fatal crashes. Some people say starting later could still cause people to wreck, by ice or not paying attention.
