Over the years there have been so many arguments over what time school should start but which one proves to be the best solution? Some people argue it should start earlier to give people more time for after school activities such as tutoring and other extra-curricular events. Some argue it should start later because science has proven that the time kids wake up for school is way too early and their brains can not function at that time. According to Baltimore Post-Examiner the 3 highest ranked high schools in the U.S for college readiness and algebra and english proficiency all begin at seven twenty five in the morning. Starting at this time would first give kids more time for after school activities, sports teams could practice earlier in the day this would especially be good for outdoor teams that need the sunlight for practice and for safety purposes when walking home a night or to their cars. It would also give athletes and regular students more time for family and to do homework, if extra help is needed it also gives time for tutoring sessions for teens that are struggling because of the homework load and busy schedules. Kids also complain about not having any time for a job, on a normal school day school ends at around three thirty and most students have other obligations such as sports or other hobbies. By the time they get done with these things they have homework and still have to manage to get their full 8 hours of sleep. School starting earlier and ending earlier would make having a job possible and would get students in bed at a decent time every night. An earlier start time doesn’t just benefit students is also benefits the parents. Parents usually work early in the morning so if school started close to when they go to work it would eliminate the cost of daycare before school for children that are too young to take care of themselves. Also, students will be up later finishing homework and socializing on their phones with friends. Although schools will now have been adjusted to fit with students sleep cycles, that does not mean that the students will actually get more sleep. Also, people do not think of the consequences such as conflicts with transportation.
The first reason why school should start later is because teens need sleep. Most teens don’t or can’t go to sleep to get the needed amount of sleep, so they are more rushed in the morning and stressed throughout the day. According to the national sleep foundation, “59% of sixth graders and 87% of high schoolers aren’t getting the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night. Sleep deprivation for students in school can affect mood, health, ability to pay attention, deal with stress, and retain information, but that's not even everything that is affected. Students are not getting enough sleep to sustain them. As a result of waking up too early for school, students do not function properly. School starting later will allow students to be happier and more energized, this will also keep students from being disrespectful to teachers and staff. Students that started school later show that they attend their classes and actually go to school for once.
That's why we need to start school later to get the recommended hours of sleep to prevent all the things we feel in the morning. Why School Should Have a Later Start Time Most students, if asked, would say they wished school started later for many reasons. School is a fundamental institution for educating children and learning needs to happen when the child has had a good night’s rest with the right amount of recommended sleeping hours. Teenagers tend to fall asleep later and have the need to sleep in. School should have a later start time because the adolescents would be cutting out quite a bit of risk factors, adolescents will feel healthier with extra sleep time, and there would be less risks of teenagers falling asleep in class.

We’ve all woken up tired not wanting to go to school, because we didn’t get enough sleep. Of course when I say we, I mean as in teens who go to school, and possibly yourself when at the time in your life. The schedule for school doesn’t fit in very well with our sleep patterns. Sleep experts from the University of Minnesota, have found that later start times made students have a better health measure and over perform better in school (Hoofman 2). Research being done on this topic mostly specifies that bodies don’t agree with the start time, for various reasons. If school started later, it would increase grades. For example, a high school that tried a later start time noticed big changes in their grades. The average SAT score for one class rose from 1288 to 1500 after the students got to sleep in longer (Popova, Maria).This shows that their grades grew 14% by just sleeping in longer. It also accentuates the long term effects of sleeping in more. In fact, the college board saw the new results and said it was “truly flabbergasting” (Popova, Maria). If even the college board agrees that starting school later could be beneficial, than why haven’t more schools taken action? Not only does later start times improve grades, it also keeps student safer.

Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
