When most people think about sharks, they probably picture something like this. A big, horrifying shark, with many sharp teeth longing for the human flesh. They are scary, dangerous and killing machines. But it isn’t the truth. In fact, this is a fake. It’s from the movie Jaws. The shark’s mechanical and the scene is a set up.

This is the medias way of showing sharks. When you search on sharks on google all of the top hits are either articles of a shark attack or a video showing horrifying encounters with the great white.

What they don’t show, is this side of the sharks.

As you saw, the way most people think about sharks are very misleading. One of the biggest misunderstanding with sharks is that they attack humans, but truth is, they rarely do. This is false. When they attack a human, which they rarely do, it’s usually a case of mistaken identity. They mistake humans for their real food, seals for example. They also like to investigate unknown objects with a test bite. When they realize it’s a human, they let go because we’re not very tasty. But even if they let go very quickly, their many sharp teeth may have already caused the human severe injure which may lead to the individual bleeding to death. So the deaths caused by sharks are mostly because bleeding to death and its very rare for the shark actually consume human
