The lack of lockers is causing student failure. Fewer and fewer students are bringing their heavy books to class. Many of them are choosing to leave their books at home. This situation is causing teacher frustration and a decline in students’ grades. According to a survey, 80% of the teachers at our school feel that they cannot teach effectively unless the students have the required books. When students are unable to refer to the text in class, the group discussions are adversely affected. Students can’t use accurate facts and details to support their ideas because they don’t have the proper reference materials. The National Teachers’ Association Guidebook states, “Having easy access to textual evidence increases a student’s ability …show more content…
The weight can cause a variety of back problems including scoliosis. This is a problem not only for the child’s health but also because back pain can interfere with the learning environment. Kids need to feel healthy during the day so they can keep up with their schoolwork injury free.” 6\3\2014
, a student at our local middle school, suffers excruciating pain every day of his life. The student has missed numerous days of school due to doctors’ appointments and therapy sessions. You are probably wondering what happened to the student . Well, he had to carry more than 50 pounds of books to school each day because the school has no lockers. During the first semester, one of the disks in his spine split apart because of the weight of his books. Our local high school does not provide lockers for their students, and many have to carry heavy loads of books on their backs every day. Installing lockers at our school would involve a lot of time and money, and there are many people who don’t think we need them. However, lockers will eliminate possible back problems,
First, allowing students to carry backpacks throughout the school day would save everyone time. Since backpacks have multiple compartments, they allow students to carry learning materials like textbooks, calculators, binders, and writing utensils. Students can use backpacks to transport laptops inside dedicated sleeves. As a result, students would waste less time at their lockers searching through debris for assignments and missing homework. Teachers, too, will welcome backpacks when they no longer have to squander valuable minutes writing locker passes. Less locker stops will reduce hallway congestion, expediting travel between classes. Without wasting the teacher’s precious minutes, students can get a drink of water, go to the bathroom, or take care of personal hygiene needs. . Even custodians will appreciate the practicality of backpacks when they are no longer interrupted from their busy jobs to unjam a muddled locker because of cumbersome coats and binders.
The school locker is usually the only private space available to a student in the environment of the school. So it focuses many of the main issues involved in privacy of the students. The 4th Amendment of the US Constitution states “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the person or things to be seized.”
According to the National Education Association, at least 100,000 students bring guns to school, 160,000 students skip classes because they fear physical harm, 40 students are killed or hurt by firearms, nearly 6,250 teachers are threatened with bodily injury, and 260 teachers are physically assaulted. These facts are not based on once year, but as every single school day. Could one even imagine what the numbers might look like on scale for a month of school, let alone a whole year? So would starting with searching lockers really be a step to far to try and lower the numbers? Some may think yes due to the school invading the students’ privacy. The majority of people though will say no, doing searches of student’s lockers is not a bad thing. Though there may be a few draw backs to conducting locker searches, the benefit of them far outweigh them. Schools should have the right to do searches of the student lockers because it will deter unwanted things, they have permission under loco parentis, and it would allow administers to make sure for safer schools.
... the school system is working with the community to create a safety plan where each of their faculty and staff and students can feel and be in a safer environment, and also, with student’s privacy they will keep the usage of lockers to a minimum as well as a search of the lockers.
In light of recent acts of violence in the nation’s schools, school safety and security have become a hot topic. However, the issue of school safety goes beyond student violence. It includes property damage, theft, and anything else that concerns the overall well being of schools. While it is important to create a safe environment in schools it is also necessary to make sure students feel comfortable in this atmosphere. The security can not be so overbearing that it becomes a negative tactic that gets in the way of the students main objective, learning. Barely noticeable cameras, ID cards, and security guards without uniforms can help generate this safe, but comfortable learning environment. On the other hand metal detectors and mini police forces may be a little too reminiscent of George Orwell’s novel, 1984, or even modern prisons. School security should not be overbearing or obtrusive where it gets in the way of a comfortable environment that is conducive to learning in the nation’s schools.
All schools that have locker searches let the students know that it is policy if the student isn't hiding anything then there shouldn't be an issue. 77% of most kids would be happier and 55% would learn more if schools where safer. Keeping kids safe is what it's all about; no one is talking about strip searches, it's just open you locker, open your bag and be on your way. American public schools are not safe, and need to have greater security measures to ensure the students safety; our country should not have to live through another Columbine.
“The biggest drawback to a school locker search is the lack of trust students may feel as a result of actions they see as an invasion of privacy,” is what Dennis Hartman had to say on the matter. For instance, if a student had harmful things in their locker, it’d be easier to find and confiscate them. This would prevent a potentially dangerous situation, and the student would face proper consequences. Whilst I agree that locker searches could definitely potentially keep schools safer, I still believe that there are better ways to enforce safety than going through a student’s possessions, which could be mentally damaging.
We all know the fourth amendment. It states that we have the right to our own privacy, it protects us from illegal searches, and keeps us from being randomly placed in jail without reason.“It begins by declaring that the “right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated.”(Rohde). According to the constitution, schools don’t have the right to search students’ lockers, because it violates the rights of the average student.
I think school officials should be able to search students’ lockers if they suspect anyone has drugs/weapons. If a student has drugs or weapons in their locker, it needs to be addressed, so no one gets hurt. If schools didn’t search lockers randomly, students would be bringing drugs/weapons on a regular basis. Schools are a place for students to learn, not a place for students to hang out and get wasted. Drugs/weapons are a bad combination and lead to bad things like mass shootings.
Safety at Central York School District isn’t good because the bags aren’t searched and the students themselves aren’t searched. Someone could hide a weapon in their bag. If only bags are searched, someone could hide something in their clothes. “Most school security specialists agree that professional school security programs are much more comprehensive…” (Trump, Ken). If other schools believe that more security would make schools safer, why isn’t Central doing
Do you think lockers should be in classrooms or hallways? Having lockers in the hallway may seem foolish to some, but there are numerous reasons why lockers in the hallway will benefit students. High school and middle schools should have lockers in the hallways, instead of in classrooms. To begin, lockers should be put in hallways because, in some schools, space in classrooms are limited. For example, in California space is limited as well (Director of Loss Control).
News of horrific events overshadows everything in your day. “Three students shot dead in California”, “School shooting kills four in New York”. All of this tragedy, this loss of life, could be stopped if school officials took the necessary steps to conduct much needed searches of student materials. A very controversial topic in the United States is whether schools have the right to search student backpacks and lockers without probable cause and without student consent. The stakeholders in this are school officials and students. School officials are pushing for more control over what materials students have in their backpacks and lockers whereas students are asking for the right to refuse unreasonable searches. This is important because essential
The reason that locker searches are unnecessary unless reported is the fact that principals, deans, administrators, and officers are invading everyone's privacy. In paragraph four in the article “Pros and Cons of School Locker Searches” it states “ The biggest drawback to a school
School bags represent a considerable daily occupational load for school children. According to a general guideline the weight of the school bag should not exceed 10% of the body weight of the children. But the current scenario may challenge the guidelines. Students routinely carry several books, sheets, files notebooks, workbooks, and play kits to school which makes the school bag as heavy as 20-25% of their weight. And hence the consequences are several physical injuries. Students experience back pain, muscle strain, fatigue etc.
Should students wear uniforms? Some parents say yes because their kids get picked on because of what they wear, some kids say no because they hate uniforms or they hate looking like everyone else. Uniforms can be a pro and a con; they can help the school community, but also can tear your school in half. Uniforms aren't mandatory in many public schools, hardly any in Virginia. 16.5% of all the public schools in the United States required students to wear uniforms. In addition, 54% enforce a strict dress code. Uniforms can cause much pain, some people love them and others dislike them. In word of Jawaharlal Nehru” Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents determinism; the way you play it is free will” It's truly are choice to choose if uniforms are mandatory we are the voice. We are the community, if you do not say something nobody will, you are change and if you want change. Do not wait to the last-minute to say something, in the words of Karen lamb “A year from now you will wish you had started today” so please do not wa...
