Current scenario
School bags represent a considerable daily occupational load for school children. According to a general guideline the weight of the school bag should not exceed 10% of the body weight of the children. But the current scenario may challenge the guidelines. Students routinely carry several books, sheets, files notebooks, workbooks, and play kits to school which makes the school bag as heavy as 20-25% of their weight. And hence the consequences are several physical injuries. Students experience back pain, muscle strain, fatigue etc.
The ongoing concern regarding the increasing weight of school bag these days and their negative effects on the growing spines of the kids was the main issue to be addressed by developing this app.
In an attempt to reduce the burden, the state government in 2012 has introduced a trimester based text book for classes 1-8th. Chapters from all subjects for the term were compiled in one or two textbooks. The method was extended to class IX too this year. The CBSE too has advised affiliated schools to reduce the burden on students and one of the objectives of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system, introduced in CBSE schools, and State-board schools up to class IX, was to reduce the academic burden. However, the reform does not help if schools do not keep a limit on the number of notebooks.
Delhi-based NGO Uday Foundation’s recent petition, ‘Save my back’ — an appeal to the MHRD against heavy school bags yet again harps on the importance of the battle against the bulge.
Tough the steps are being taken by the government to reduce the burden of school bags on children, but still the problem doesn’t seem to solve. The new rules have helped considerably but much remains to be done.

Various schools having implemented the PEAC app can collaborate on a larger level and share their learning experiences and various issues faced using the app. Teachers across the schools can check the method of learning used by a teacher at other school by using the app. And if the material or method or a technology used by other teacher at other school is found better than the teacher can request for a permission to the other teacher to share it with his students also. And it creates a possibility of making the subject material public or not to be shared except only with the students the teacher belongs to.
