Recommended: No more backpacks in school

First, allowing students to carry backpacks throughout the school day would save everyone time. Since backpacks have multiple compartments, they allow students to carry learning materials like textbooks, calculators, binders, and writing utensils. Students can use backpacks to transport laptops inside dedicated sleeves. As a result, students would waste less time at their lockers searching through debris for assignments and missing homework. Teachers, too, will welcome backpacks when they no longer have to squander valuable minutes writing locker passes. Less locker stops will reduce hallway congestion, expediting travel between classes. Without wasting the teacher’s precious minutes, students can get a drink of water, go to the bathroom, or take care of personal hygiene needs. . Even custodians will appreciate the practicality of backpacks when they are no longer interrupted from their busy jobs to unjam a muddled locker because of cumbersome coats and binders.

It is easy and very cost effective for custodians to hang thirty hooks along a wall in every classroom over the summer, or even just have students lie their backpacks along an internal wall in the classroom. this will prevent tripping and will keep the classroom clean and organized. Manny belive that have backpacks will promote the use of contraband of weapons and/or drugs however this is simply not true most of the time when this happens backpacks play little to no role. students that bring weapons or drugs carry them in sweatshirts or jackets. backpacks are just used to get them to and from school which students have the ability to do now. In order to carry a backpack around all day every student will sign a contract giving administration full power over student backpack usage. in the contract students will agree to not bring any

The use of weapons to do violence has had much the same results. In some schools, the students pass through a metal detector and/or are searched for weapons upon a regular basis. (Ch. 4 news at 6:00), However, when the weapons being used are common school supplies, what can one do? The number of students injured by their classmates with common school supplies such as pencils and pens are on the rise. A student carrying a gun or a knife is often busted before having an opportunity to use said weapon, one with a pencil on the other hand, they run free until they seriously injure or even possibly kill someone with the pencil. Our current policy is to deal with the student after they commit the crime, as far as stabbing with pencils go anyway, treating them as though they had used any other weapon. It is my belief that something can be done to prevent, or at least minimize the number of incidents involving the use of pencils as 'stealth'; weapons in our classrooms. Although we do not need to worry about lead poisoning from pencils, (pencil lead is really graphite), (From graphite to pencil, Ali Mitgutsch, 1985) when misused a pencil is a deadly weapon, one far worse than a pocketknife.
