Lydia Kamakaeha better know as Queen Liliuokalani was born on September 2, 1838, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was born into Royalty. She was the last monarch and only queen of the kingdom of Hawaii. Liliuokalani parents were Caesar Kapa‘akea and Analea Keohokālole. Her father was the Hawaiian chief of the patriarch of the House of Kalākaua, he ruled the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1874 to 1893. Her mother was a Hawaiian chiefess and matriarch of the House of Kalākaua she ruled the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1874 to 1893. Liliuokalani had three siblings named David Kalākaua, Miriam Likelike and William Pitt Leleiōhoku. Her brother David was the last reigning king of Hawaii’s Kingdom. Her Sister Likelike was a Princess of Hawaii’s kingdom. Her brother William was a prince of the Kingdom of Hawaii and a member of the reigning House of Kalākaua. Liliuokalani married John O. O’Hara was born in Chicago Illinois in 1913. There, she initially lived a happy life as the daughter of strict Catholic parents. She was a beautiful Irish woman with fair skin and dark eyes and hair. Dazzled by jewels and gorgeous clothing, O’Hara fell into the oldest profession. Becoming accustomed to fast money, she left home and went to San Francisco. A few years later in mid-1938 she took what she learned and moved to Hawaii to make money.
Cultural Analysis Queen Latifah played a big role in the hip hop industry as a female MC, and still is relevant to this day. She influenced millions of people especially in the black community for equality between women and men. She’s an American song-writer, actress, fashion producer, model, female MC, feminist, television producer, record producer, and talk show hostess. The Hip-hop culture began around the 1970’s in Bronx, New York and it was mostly amongst the Black and Latino community at that time. Hip Hop emerged out of an atmosphere of disappointment, anger, hate, discrimination, and disillusionment which; made it easy for the audience to comprehend and enjoy the music not as a song, but as a public personal message for each person to understand.
Hailing from the African state of Ndongo and born in 1581 during the start of Luandan disagreement with Portuguese settlers (Toler 265), Queen Nzinga of the African Mbundu tribe stood up for her country and reestablished power over her people. Nzinga came in a time period that needed her. She got her country of Matamba (present day Angola) equal, both economically and socially, to the Portuguese. In order to do this, Nzinga took measures to place herself in the right position to eventually seize rule and steer her country in the right direction, even though it prompted a steady flow of opposition from her enemies. These initial enemies included the Imbangala tribes and irritated Portuguese Settlers, both of which she succeeded in turning into allies. Queen Nzinga's rule was well justified by a legal rise to the throne, and her subsequent role as a skilled ruler counteracted her reputation as a thriving slave trader.
First, a little background on Queen Anne. Anne was born February 6, 1665 to the parents of James, Duke of York and Lady Anne Hyde. She was born in the St. James Palace of London. Anne's father later reigned as James II, but was later dethroned by Anne's sister and brother-in-law Mary and William. Both Mary and William ruled together until their deaths and because they were childless, Anne succeeded them to the throne.
Stevens held firm beliefs about the future of Hawaii in the hands of the United States. From the start of his stay in Hawaii, Stevens made it clear whose side he was on in the political war. He would openly criticize Hawaii’s monarchy, and at times would refer to Queen Liliuokalani and her advisors as “incompetent”(2). Stevens may have not held anything against the Queen herself or any of her cabinet members, but rather degraded them simply to achieve his goals of the annexation of Hawaii, something that he considered “the only effective remedy for Hawaii’s troubles.” (2) Queen Liliuokalani naturally spoke out against the degradation of herself and her cabinet, and on behalf of her position of defending the Hawaiian Monarchy. “The U.S. Minister John Stevens was influenced by the annexationists. As a diplomat, his role was to foster a friendly, trusting relationship with the Hawaiian government. Instead, he often criticized the monarchy in public. I complained to the U.S. government about Stevens’ attitude and conduct but no action was taken.” (1)
Since its publication in 1981, Joy Kogawa's Obasan has assumed an important place in Canadian literature and in the broadly-defined, Asian-American literary canon. Reviewers immediately heralded the novel for its poetic force and its moving portrayal of an often-ignored aspect of Canadian and American history. Since then, critics have expanded upon this initial commentary to examine more closely the themes and images in Kogawa's work. Critical attention has focused on the difficulties and ambiguities of what is, in more ways than one, a challenging novel. The complexity of Obasan's plot, the intensity of its imagery, and the quiet bitterness of its protest challenge readers to wrestle with language and meaning in much the same way that Naomi must struggle to understand her past and that of the larger Japanese-Canadian community. In this sense, the attention that Obasan has received from readers and critics parallels the challenges of the text: Kogawa's novel, one might say, demands to be reckoned with, intellectually as well as emotionally.

Elizabeth I was born in Greenwich Palace on September 7, 1533 to Henry VII and Anne Boleyn, the king’s second wife. Elizabeth inherited the throne from her half-sister, Mary Tudor, after her death in 1588, and she was coronated on January 15, 1559 (Rowse). Elizabeth set out to make changes and compromises to the contrasting choices of rule of her two predecessors and half-siblings, Edward VI and Mary Tudor. During her reign from 1588-1603, Queen Elizabeth I greatly impacted the arts, religion, and government of England.

Sugar production was Hawaii’s largest buissiness. Tons of sugar was grown in Hawaii. Many of the Hawaiians worked on the sugar farms. Sugar was sold to the United States and large amounts of money flowed into Hawaii. Hawaii’s economy grew and banks were built. Annexation America’s main goal was to overthrow monarchy and Annex Hawaii as the 50th state. In 1887, the Americans forced king Kalakaua to sign a new constitutions that lessened the king’s powers and limited the rights of native Hawaiians to hold office. After Kalakaua’s death, Queen Liliuokalani ruled Hawaii. She was stubborn and wanted Hawaiian independence. But the Americans took over the government and ended monarchy and set up their own government. They put up the American flag where the Hawaiian flag originally flew. So, in other words, Hawaii was stolen from its original owners. Defenseless, Hawaii couldn’t do anything about United States’ control. Hawaii was then Annexed to the United states in 1898.
The Hawaiian society evolved into layered hierarchy. The highest authority was the mo`i, the ali`i holding the highest chiefly rank. He was the ruler and owner of all annual taxes, oversaw important religious rites and acted as leader during war. The Ali’i ‘s advisers were the kalaimoku, or chief minister, and the kahuna nui, or high priest.
Biography: Kauikeaouli Kaleiopapa Kuamanolani Mahinalani Kalaninuiwaiakua Keaweawe‘ulaokalani, also know as Kamehameha the III, was born at Keauhou, Kona on the island of Hawai‘i. Historians speculate that the Kauikeaouli’s birthday was around August 11th. Later in life Kauikeaouli chose March 17th as his birthday after learning about Saint Patrick from an irish friend. The name Kauikeaouli is believed to mean “Placed in Dark Clouds.” His father was Kamehameha the Great, and his mother was Keōpūolani. According to the PBS show “Hawaii's Last Queen” the Republic Hawaii's president Sanford Dole annexed the kingdom of Hawaii to the U.S on August 12, 1898. An organization supporting annexation called the Hawaiian League led by Lorrin Thurston which took many other forms forced King Kalakaua to sign the bayonet constitution. This constitution striped the power of the monarchy and when his death came his sister Lili'uokalani ascended to the throne and her hopes were to restore power to the Hawaiians which the constitution took away. The missionary boys did not like the queens ideals so they planned to overthrow the monarchy for good which they did later on in history. The annexation was an unjust act done by a group of bisness men wanting power and Hawaii as a territory of the U.S. Although some might argue that annexation was good because it allowed trade to the U.S tariff free others oppose that it was biased because it stripped Hawaiian of their rights to vote and destroyed the Hawaiian monarchy.
My favourite text is a play titled “Anowa” by Ama Ataa Aidoo which was published in year 1969. This book was first given to me by my father on my twelfth birthday. Although I was disappointed initially because I was expecting something “girly” on my birthday, I liked it when I read it because of the moral lessons it portrayed and the language used in the play. However, I got a deeper understanding of the test after I did a post-colonial and a feminist analysis on the text. In my post-colonial analysis, I saw that in a sense Anowa represents the beauty of the formal African society which was destroyed as a result of colonialism. A feminist analysis on the other hand shows that Anowa is a woman who is struggling against the 1870’s African feminist identity (the identity of weakness).
