Kainalu Puʻu-Robinson Saculla Hawaiian Culture 1:30 29 March 2016 Thesis Paper Title Biography: Kauikeaouli Kaleiopapa Kuamanolani Mahinalani Kalaninuiwaiakua Keaweawe‘ulaokalani, also know as Kamehameha the III, was born at Keauhou, Kona on the island of Hawai‘i. Historians speculate that the Kauikeaouli’s birthday was around August 11th. Later in life Kauikeaouli chose March 17th as his birthday after learning about Saint Patrick from an irish friend. The name Kauikeaouli is believed to mean “Placed in Dark Clouds.” His father was Kamehameha the Great, and his mother was Keōpūolani. Kauikeaouli had attempted a Reciprocity Treaty and the annexation of Hawaii to the US. The second way is he put his people first. As a result of the constitution, Kauikeaouli stripped some of his own power. In 1830, Kamehameha III signed a law called the Declaration of Rights - it guaranteed all the people the right to life, possessions, and equal protection under the laws of the nation. Kauikeaouli was hesitant to establish the Christian ten commandments because he was unsure whether his people wanted Christian Laws. The third way is he got Hawaiians involved in Hawaii’s government The constitution said that common people had the right to send representatives who would work with the chiefs to make additional laws as needed. They would also have a say in the spending of government taxes. Established a government that was made of the king, the kuhina nui, and the chiefs-in council, along with the representatives. Conclusion: In conclusion, Kauikeaouli worked to preserve the Hawaiian people and culture because tried new things, put his people first, and he got Hawaiians involved in Hawaii’s government. The effects of things such as the Great Mahele are still heavily felt today. Even though some of these effects were/are negative, Kauikeaouli tried to do what's in the best interest of the people. Despite the bad things that happened during and after his reign, some still claimed him to be their favorite
