The Urgent Need for Increased Quality in Healthcare

The need for increased quality in the healthcare system is extremely important and should not be overlooked. Quality can refer to many aspects in the healthcare system, not just the individual’s interaction with the provider. The population, as a whole, should have a health status that is improving. Quality across the entire healthcare system needs to be enhanced. Working through factors such as: underuse, misuse and overuse would be a way to start improving the quality of healthcare in our system.

Having family members who had a chronic illness and/or cancer, and have been through various aspects of the healthcare system made that apparent. There were cases of overuse and misuse, as defined in the article, that my family members went through. My aunt, who was diagnosed with breast cancer, had a procedure with complications. This caused her to have a poor outcome and extended hospital stay. This caused more harm than good for her. If there had been a better-quality procedure in place, that might not have occurred. Often, the quality of care received does not equate to the cost of said care. The improvements need to start with the most basic of doctor patient function, communication. Most people have experienced the physician who was more interested in getting out of the door than actively listening to the patients concerns. One cannot provide quality care and do what is best for the patient if he/she does not take the time to truly listen to the patient.
