The Canterville Ghost (Task 1)
For my school project, about classics, I chose “The Canterville Ghost”, written by Oscar Wilde . There wasn’t any special reason why I chose it, but I basically “judged it by its cover”. For me, it looked like an interesting book, mostly because of its title. Since it included the word “ghost”, I thought it could be a thrilling ghost story. Oscar Wilde also affected my choice. I had heard of him before I started reading “The Canterville ghost”, but I’d never read one of his works.
The book is not very long, but the language is quite advanced. It’s about an American family that moves into an old British chase, called “Canterville Chase”. A book is theoretically just some paper and words, but it can be so much more. I remember reading the first Harry Potter book, and it felt like I was inside it . It took all my thoughts away, and the only thing I focused on was the book. I wasn’t that old then, so I didn’t have a lot of worries, but I’m sure a good book could be stress relieving.
By reading books your ability to concentrate will improve, at least it feels like mine did. Whenever I read, I got to focus on what I’m reading, so I consume the information the text gives me. Maybe you have felt like your eyes are floating down the page, but you don’t know what you’re reading, so you read it again? So, concentration is a key part when reading, and maybe you will also improve it by reading.
Reading doesn’t just make your reading capability increase, but also your writing skills. When you consistently read books, you will meet new words. Sometimes they can be easy, but they can also be hard to understand. By learning new words your vocabulary will expand, and your writing will be more
