The Importance Of Literacy

Being literate defines who I am, and forms an integral part of my life. From the practical to the creative, it aids, and enables me to perform in the tasks that modern society dictates. I shall explore the many aspects of my life that are affected by literacy. Through this, understanding in greater depth what it means for me, to be literate.

I would not be writing this essay if were not for the pathways being literate has opened. Every year of my life, marks a year of accomplishment in literacy. This can be seen through my progression within school. The numerous exams I passed would not have been accomplished if I could not coherently write about the knowledge, and opinions I had formed growing up. These answers became the grades I needed to gain entry to university. I am very thankful to my parents for having the foresight and awareness to teach me from an early age how to read and write.
With this knowledge, my parents helped me write my first resume, and apply for my first job. My first job required me to read, and
I use this to connect with friends and relatives that do not live in Australia. I can email, or message them via the sites and stay connected. One of the greatest benefits of literacy is the ability to communicate and connect to people from across the globe. It is fantastic that I can update family back in England, send them my regards, and likewise read their responses too. Literacy enables connections whether that be with someone familiar or foreign which I thoroughly enjoy.
My creativity also stems from my literacy. I can better understand and interpret different forms of art, such as; foreign movies, music and books. Living in a country with freedom of speech, and access to such art, has empowered me to live my life and form my own opinions and thoughts.
