Texting is one of the most common method of communication used to establish and maintain relationships in the 21st century. This way, text messaging has become an essential part of one-way communications. Anyway, according to some researchers and experts, text messaging actually does more harm than good in the establishment and maintenance of interpersonal relationships.
Frist and foremost, it is undeniable that strong relationships are built on communication and with the establishment of technologies, the way people interact and socialize has also changed. While face-to-face communication is the key part to any social interaction, the text messaging comes in as an alternative. Its speed of conveying messages instantly means that one can communicate with friends and loved ones instantly and learn how they are doing. Since it’s cheap and easy to use, may people opt for this method to maintain their social circles and building new ones.
Additionally, research shows that people tend to communicate through text on matters they cannot be able to express through face to face interaction. Many people also find it hard to, let’s say, ask a girl out, but with texting, they are able to do it without suffering the emotional torture. In addition to that, communication with anonymous people or even those one has not seen for a long time is possible and easy through the text messaging.
While reviewing the effects of texting in establishing and maintaining relationships therefore, it is clear that this form of communication is limiting. Though it is cheap and fast, it is also riddled by cases of miscommunication and suppression of expressions. In line with that, the inability to read nonverbal cues or bodily movements, an essential pat of expression, makes it hard to maintain relationships with the people one is texting. Since the art of texting is possible and easy through friends as well as strangers, habitual texters as well as those in relationships find it easy to cheat and also move on since they lack the emotional intellect needed to maintain and build
