Over exposure to fluoride can cause a problem in the male reproductive system. Scientist did many tests on lab rats to see if it affected the reproductive system in all male rats. The overexposure to fluoride damages sperm cells in the men which can have a major effect on reproduction. It can also increase the rate of infertility which could cause problems in having children. The increase in infirmity in couples living in the United States was higher than other places (Connett 12). Many diseases that appear when high levels of fluoride are being consumed is bone disease in dialysis patients. Kidney disease can advance if the person if the person already has the disease. Other diseases that can occur from high intake levels of fluoride are arthritis, brain damage while in development, reduce thyroidal osteosarcoma, and bone cancer. A Review of EPA’s Standards stated, “When we looked at the studies that have been done we found that many of these questions are unsettled and we have much less information that we should, considering how long this [fluoridation] has been going on.” The absence of studies for as long as the fluoridation has been going on the health problems and concerns of people has also been absent too. The National Research Council has also been called to attention for the lack of study done on fluoride (Connett 15). Many scientists have lost their jobs due to them standing up and speaking against fluoridation. Some of the scientists that have lost their jobs include Dr. Phyllis Mullenix and Dr. William Marcus. They spoke against the use of fluoride being put into the water and the effect it is having on people. The censorship and intimidation was one reason they lost their jobs.
