Early Start Times

In the year 2000, over 35 percent of kids said the only reason they disliked school was because of early start times. It is because of this that teens everywhere are truant when it comes to school. Teenagers should be for earlier start times because they will have more time to complete assigned homework and their after school activities would end earlier. With there being many more factors dealing with why early start times are better for the average student, the main argument lies with the fact that teenagers in highschool don’t complete their daily homework.

The United States Census Bureau found in 2014 that 57 percent of children between the ages of 6-17 participate in at least one after school activity. When this many kids have after school engagements, it’s hard to find the time and space for these groups to take place. Depending on what club or sport students are in, they could get home around eleven pm every other night. Keeping the start times earlier will help prevent students from getting home at ten or eleven. HealthCentral states that, “Before our kids reach adolescence, these circadian rhythms typically lead most children to naturally fall asleep around 8 or 9 p.m. However, puberty changes a teen's internal clock. It can delay the time he or she starts feeling sleepy—often until 11 p.m.” A circadian rhythm is like an internal clock. It tells you when you want to get up, when you want to eat, and even regulates people’s temperatures. If kids got the chance to get to sleep earlier, their ‘internal clock’ will keep them awake. Furthermore, if school activities were in the morning it would further defeat the purpose of having a later start time.
