When I think of my favorite hobbies, fishing is what comes to mind. I love to spend time fishing with my friends and family. However, there is no replacement for the thrill of reeling in a spirited bass and competing with my buddies to out fish each other.
Last summer, I accompanied my friends down to Pelahatchie and went fishing at our secluded fishing spot. While my friends headed to the pond, I decided to assess the creek first and see if the fish are biting. The creek is about six feet deep and twenty feet wide at the area we planned to enter. The sides slope down from the forest floor down to the banks with tufts of the tall grass lining the edges, making it difficult to see my entry point. After I made my way through the tall grass, I noticed that the bank's edges were extremely muddy. While carefully climbing down the slope to get to access the creek banks, I slipped, slid down and landed spectacularly on my backside. As I’m passing through the trees, I see my friends have already caught a five-pound bass. Making my way through the grass, I locate my usual spot and begin preparing my bait. I cast off to the left, aiming to avoid tangling with my friend’s lines to my right. As I’m reeling in the bait, I noticed a ripple near my bait and tugged on my pole slightly to try and attract the fish. My pole bent over almost immediately as I set the hook and prepare to reel in my first fish of the day. While reeling in the fish, I notice that it begins to veer towards the weeds in the water. I attempt to steer my first catch to an area where I can easily scoop it out of the water, but the fish has other plans.
