5 Things You Must Do When Ice Fishing

Are you passionate about ice fishing? I adventure your cup of tea? If so, then ice fishing is your game. Ice fishing refers to a fishing method in which a person, also known as an angler, catches fish from a frozen water body via a hole dug in the ice.

While some anglers catch fish by simply sitting on the frozen water, others go onto the ice with heated cabins or other elaborate setups to make the activity smooth. The United States has designated public water bodies, including lakes and ponds, where people can carry out ice fishing.

You risk coming out of the ice with nothing if you go out with that ordinary fishing knowledge and mentality. The more knowledge you gain about ice fishing, the more fish you will catch. Consider the following tips for successful ice fishing:

• Just like human beings, fish need food, oxygen, and shelter. These three basic needs dictate the location of fish in the ice and just realizing this will make winter fishing a lot easier.
• Understand the movement of fish. Since small water bodies have limited oxygen supply, fish tend to stay shallower. On the contrary, fish in larger lakes have adequate oxygen supply; hence, fish tend to stay where there is food. The fish may also stay deeper because the temperature of the deep water is slightly higher.
• You need to know that fish has senses. They can hear, taste, see, and smell. They have lateral line which helps them to detect movement in water. When they are in danger, they can run away. You will really have to watch your movements because you do not want to go away with empty hands.
