Education is one of the most important components of our world. Education is essential in finding a career in the future, as well as having common knowledge. School has always started in the morning and ended in the late afternoon. Lately, many students want the time in which school begins to move to a later time. Very intelligent people run the educational system, and if there were an easy fix to this problem, they would have figured out a solution by now. Education is a necessity in the modern world, and makes or breaks the future of every student’s careers. Many people would have to opt out of an activity or just add more stress to their life getting home later, maybe even missing dinner. One article believes a result of later release times, “may result in the cancellation of some programs,” (Eight Major Obstacles). The programs at-risk include: JV programs, swimming, and golf. Additionally, the later release time time will cut into academic classes as “some athletes might be required to leave class early in order to attend a match,” (Eight Major Obstacles). This problem makes sports more stressful to play and causes people to leave earlier from class for a game. More proof of this negatively affecting after school activities is, “participation in other activities such as after-school tutorials, religious classes, community service, or clubs may also be jeopardized by a later release time,”(Eight Major Obstacles). This statement shows the many activities that people participate in need to drop them or lose time just because people want a later school start time. A student athlete’s perspective claims, “I'd rather not be at softball practice till eight at night when it is pitch black because some people have a problem with getting up at six in the morning because they go to bed at midnight,”(Should Schools Start). Students may need to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Schools should have later arrival times. 59% of 6th through 8th graders and 87% of high school students do not get the recommended 8.5 and 9.5 hours of sleep. Many people are resistant to change, especially if it involves reassembling their plans and procedures to adjust to the new schedule. This is a problem for parents’ work schedules since they most likely will not be able to see their kids in the morning which will leave students unsupervised when they get ready. This is also a problem for transportation since parents will not be able to take their kids to school which might cause traffic and more costs since bus schedules would change too.
