School Starts and Change According to Jama Network, when a high school in Rhode Island changed the school start time to 8:30 rather than 8:00, there was a 38.3% increase in getting eight or more hours of sleep every night. Grades and attendance were also among the improvements shown in students. Teachers were also showing a better amount of sleep when the schools began a later start time. (Jama Network). These improvements can help shape a student’s future. Without a change in a school’s start time, middle school and high school students tend to have poor sleep patterns and bad grades. Therefore, changing the school start times to an hour later in middle schools and high schools across the world would provide many benefits to students.
School should start later because students would be able to receive more health benefits from sleep. Research has revealed that teens have different sleep patterns than children and adults and these sleep patterns are typically disrupted by early school start times. This change would no longer provide the convenience of high schoolers and middle schoolers being homes before younger children, making parents feel more secure to leave home. While this argument is fair, convenience should not be put at the risk of the better health for students. Some also may argue that not enough evidence has been made to prove the change in school start time is beneficial and effective enough to make a real difference. While others believe that to be true, many researches found bidirectional connections between sleep problems and an early school start (Jama Network).
