Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I found rugby to be an amazing experience as it showed me the importance of teamwork and dedication. It gave me the opportunity to travel and meet a lot of new people. This has helped me to socialise with people more easily allowing me to form strong relationships that mutually help others and myself. I have always enjoyed and participated in general water sports activities such as sailing and recently, paddle boarding. I enjoy self-improvement anywhere it can be applied, this includes fitness. The term ‘mentor’ has many descriptions and definitions including teacher, guide, supporter and advisor (Thesaurus). Within nursing, the role of a mentor has changed over the years from an informal advisor to a mandatory requirement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for pre-registration nursing and midwifery students (NMC 2008). This change began when nurse education moved from hospitals to higher education institutions (HEIs) (Willis, 2012). The NMC definition of a mentor is “one who facilitates learning, and supervises and assesses students in a practice setting” (NMC, 2008, p.56) which does not really describe how complex the role is (Chandon and Watts, 2012). To formally mentor students, nurses today are required to complete mentorship training set out in eight competencies (domains) in the ‘Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice’ (NMC, 2008).
I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
Regardless of the specialty, the main focus of a nurse includes assisting doctors in treating patients and providing clinical and emotional support to both patients and ancillary staff. With the role of administrative nursing supervisor comes additional responsibilities and administrative roles, such as staffing, organizing, prioritizing, and ultimately ensuring safe and quality patient care.
This vocational degree appeals to me as it will allow me to gain clinical experience in a range of settings, including primary care, specialist and intensive care areas in hospital wards. I have chosen to study children’s nursing but I am looking forward to work alongside students from all four fields of nursing to study generic material. The lifespan of humanity has increased drastically due to medicine and medical practices such as nursing, because of this, it is now vital that we ensure the health and well-being of our future generation. Being motivated, able to work under pressure and interact are fundamentals as working as a nurse may involve meeting new people each.
As I woke up in the morning to get ready for my home health day, I couldn’t help but be excited to try something new. I had tons of questions and couldn’t wait to explore what was behind the door of home health nursing.
