To improve my understanding of maintaining my capability for practice as a RN, I set a goal to learn in depth from my classes, related units, and through interacting with my friends and tutors. There were many setbacks on the way, but as I became more acquainted with the matter I began understanding better. In this reflection I’ll use Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) to address my experiences as a student nurse in fulfilling the maintenance and capability for practice. Description Through tutorials, lectures and simulation classes every semester, our practice is enhanced and maintained so that the skills and knowledge we learnt is always nurtured while new ones are gained. As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. Feelings As learning is a lifelong process, I’m sure there are many things I need to improve and learn to better myself. However, the lessons I learned during the course as a nursing student shall always remain as a bedrock for my future development. The compulsion by our university and the respective facilities during my clinical placements to always be updated in clinical skills and practices played a major role in keeping me well informed and self-assured to perform my duties well. However, one of the main setbacks in maintaining practices is the subtle differences in protocols in different facilities while on clinical placements.
