Women are designated scapegoats of societies throughout history. Women are blamed for using seduction to trick men or are used as prizes for men to fight over; consequently, this allows men to begin wars or arguments over a single woman. In the case of the Trojan War, as depicted through Homer’s Iliad, women are the outright reason for encouraging and causing the greatest heroes to fight for nothing. The Trojan War begins with the abduction of Helen (McAllister 8), which is described through previous mythology where Aphrodite awards her to Paris for judging that Aphrodite is the most beautiful goddess, thus beginning the cycle that women are made prizes. Achilles says that if he was to fight or stay home his destiny would be the same as any man. He would die as all mortals must (Homer 103). Even if Helen is the prize of this war he does not find meaning in fighting for her. Gray also mentions this occurrence where Achilles questions the reasoning for the war and says that she is not a prominent reason for him to risk his life (2). Homer’s acknowledgement of the ignorance of the warriors who fight for women is shown throughout the Iliad. Even though Helen’s abduction was the reason to start the war, Browa notices that although they fight for her not one person in the Iliad gives a crucial reason that justifies the fighting (5). Homer intentionally left out this detail because it supports his idea that men have no reason for fighting for women except the fact that a woman is a trophy. Judged by modern Western standards, the treatment of women by men in Homer's Odyssey can be characterized as sexist. Women in Homer's Odyssey are judged mainly by their looks. If important men and gods consider a woman beautiful, or if her son or husband is a hero or has an important position such as king, the woman is successful. The way women in The Odyssey are treated is based on appearance, the things men want from them, and whether the woman has any power over men. During Odysseus' journey to the underworld he sees many different types of women. We hear about their beauty, their important sons, or their affairs with gods. We hear nothing about these women's accomplishments in their lifetime. Odysseus tells how Antiope could "boast a god for a lover,"(193) as could Tyro and many other women. Epikaste was called "that prize"(195) her own son unwittingly married.
Across all barriers, women have always brought pain, suffering, and aguish to the men as demonstrated in both Homer's Odyssey and the Bible. With their beauty and grace, temptresses like the Sirens and Delilah lure men into their grasps, only to later steer them to their ruin. Other times, they use their cunning abilities and deception, as Circe and Jezebel did, in order to entice men into doing things that they normally would never accede to do. Moreover, most tragedies, disasters, and misfortunes are essentially caused by women as demonstrated by Helen, who caused the Trojan War, and Eve, who caused the exile of all mankind from the Garden of Eden and is the mother of all sin. The women of the Odyssey and the women of the Bible, through astute manipulation and seduction, inflict many tribulations, which in due course cause the pains and destruction of mankind.
Greeks had a misogynistic society, however women still had important roles in the Odyssey. Mortal women's most esteemed roles were either wife or mother. All the mortal female characters in the Odyssey existed to interact with a male, due to their beauty or sex appeal. But, the most powerful female characters in the Odyssey have other qualities such as cleverness which still play a role. Beauty is still one of the most important thing to Homer. For instance he starts a war using Helen of Troys beauty, and makes the two of the biggest obstacles Odysseus has to deal with love interests, Circe and Calypso. If you’ll remember he stayed on Circe's island an extra year longer of his own free will. However, Circe and Calypso are not mortal, so they already have the advantage. Homers non mortal women all have other qualities to them that allow them to help the plot along. Namely, Penelope, Queen of Ithaca and Odysseus bride.

Women were treated as possessions and shown to be valued for their beauty alone in many of the Greek and Roman myths. The myths surrounding the Trojan War especially show how women were objectified. When Paris was asked to judge which Goddess was the most beautiful Aphrodite bribed him, promising, “that the fairest woman in all the world should be his” (249). This myth shows that the Greeks and Romans saw women as possessions that could be stolen and bartered away. Edith Hamilton took a similar myth, the fight between Agamemnon and Achilles, from the Iliad. In this myth Agamemnon lost Chryseis, a Trojan woman who the Greeks had carried off during a victory.
