Seeing, they say, is believing. While the girls had all heard from their coach that the boys will be naked, they still had trouble believing it might be true, as doubt has a way of creeping in and altering recollections. In the week since “the announcement, ” as they had come to call it, disbelief had seeped back into the minds of the girls. That the boys will be completely naked was simply unbelievable. When Monday arrived and the final bell rang, ending the last class of the day, the girls on the swim team raced to the locker room, eager to finally know the truth. The door to the locker room held a poster-sized piece of paper. The girls recognized Miss Tewksbury’s handwriting to say, “Please change your footwear only and report directly to the poolside bleachers.” The girls quickly slipped out of their school shoes and socks, stepped into their blue and white team flip-flops, and exited the locker room to the pool area. The coaches and several of the female faculty had already assembled. Miss Tewksbury quickly quieted the girls and sat them in the first two rows of the bleachers. “In a moment, we will invite the boys out of the locker room. I will ask again that you ladies remain respectful of these young men, who are your classmates and teammates,” she started. “Remember, there will be no specific discussions of their penises, no insults relating to their bodies, and no attempts at humiliating them. We understand that this is all new to you, and we all appreciate that it will be distracting at first. The boys will understandably be nervous, as they will be naked in front of their classmates. Joes High School’s total enrollment consisted of sixteen girls, and twenty boys. Ten of the boys that had enrolled there played basketball. All of the boys were over six feet tall. Lane Sullivan, the new coach of the basketball team, had never even touched a basketball before he started coaching. Sullivan had never coached anything at all before he started coaching the Joes basketball team. In order to gain knowledge about the sport, he got a book about it. He started coaching in 1927, but before the 1928 basketball season, Joes High School didn’t even have a gym. Instead, they’d practice outside on a dirt court, and two times a week they’d take a bus to the nearest gym, which was ten miles away. In order to play home games, the boys had to play in the local dance hall. The “court” was nowhere near regulation size, and the ceiling was so short that the boys couldn’t shoot an arched shot. The people who attended these basketball games had no place to sit and watch the game, the all stood around the edges of the court and on the small stage. Joes High School finally got their own gym around Christmas time because the people of Joes donated their time and material in order to make it happen.
Lastly that children persisted with the lack of protection growing up in terms of perverts. Jeannette could not even enjoy the comfort and protection in her home without “being awakened by someone running their hand over [her] private parts” (103). The impact of being away from family also takes center stage, from dealing with the death of parents and siblings to coping with changes in family dynamics. The game of basketball also helped the girls get away from the Indian Wars and the Dawes Act that had occurred before the boarding school was founded. For many of the girls, basketball was a grounding force that continued to foster an important sisterhood among team members.

Almost all high school boys spend every day of their four years in high school working towards a reputation of a strong, manly man. Quite a lot of teenage boys find crossing any line of manhood obnoxious and trivial even for the sake of humor and school spirit. Homecoming week is full of events that are life-long memories for any student who attempts to participate along his or her fellow classmates and friends. One of the most exhilarating occasions during Homecoming week is the Powderpuff game when girls play flag football and boys perform as their cheerleaders. Powderpuff is the one and only opportunity for the junior and senior boys in high school to act, dress, and dance absolutely inappropriately in front of basically the entire school for the three to five minutes during the halftime show of the game. Even the most uptight and seemingly tough guys of the junior and senior classes sprout out of their shells to essentially love the weeks they spend dedicating their free time and attention to perfecting their powderpuff dance routine. After all is said and done, there is no possible way that any of the boys can possibly walk away from the powderpuff game feeling as if they did not have an excellent experience, but the process of cherishing their memories is not only stressful but tests the limits of sanity of not only the boys but the girls that take the time to teach the dance routine. The second young lady he described was the chunky one; he fully described the chunky girl from head to toe, because Sammy had more descriptive words regarding her appearance. The third girl was the taller of the two. She was not as striking as the other two young ladies. The girls were barefoot and wore bathing suits, which is why they caught Sammy's attention. The reason being not because of the bathing suits they were wearing, but the way they strolled down the isles with confidence as they walked through the store. (48) Updike wants to let the reader know these girls wanted attention and only attention; by the way he described what they were wearing and how they flaunted themselves.
I ran to the locker room, hoping to get there first before the rest of the girls. I liked a clean area to change my clothes, and when my peers came in the clean area I wanted soon disappeared under a heap of clothes and dirty tennis shoes. Summer has come to an end and school back in full swing. One is ready to crush the challenges facing a 5th grader. The last bell for recess sounds. Young boys race outside to enjoy the sun’s warmth. Name calling and horse-playing around immediately begins as they plan their weekend fun. Challenging each other to execute silly acts or daring one another to flirt with the girls across the playground. One yells out if you don’t jump from the top you are a sissy. Then one hears ask Julie out first. Recess is almost over when another one yells out he won’t…he’s a gay sissy. Silence has now blanketed the playground and one could hear a pin drop. In addition to that, female students are not physically averting their peers eyes towards their bodies. A young girl cannot be held responsible for her peers choosing to be distracted by her clothing choices (Levin). It is each individual student’s responsibility to focus on their school work while in a learning environment (Levin). Girls should not be shamed by schools into covering their bodies, rather, their fellow students should be shamed for not controlling themselves. Sexism in dress codes transfers blame onto female students for sexual discrimination and distraction in the classroom instead of holding individuals of both genders responsible for their education (Dockterman). The choice of a student to deflect their focus from learning to another students dress is solely up to them (Levin).
