Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s tragedies, depicts the treacherous steps that one ambitious man endures to receive the title of kingship. With the company of Banquo, whom the throne will heir to in the future, Macbeth is confronted by three witches who inform him that he will one day be king. Macbeth believes the witches prophecies, therefore deciding that he must rid of all who are of the utmost importance in terms of kingship. Once Macbeth murders various characters such as King Duncan, his two Chamberlains, Banquo, Lady Macbeth, her children, and Siward with the use of chicanery, he continues to dig himself into deeper water. Macbeth exemplifies a plot including a character with a massive amount of greed while during the same time, other Scottish Noblemen attempt to fulfill the prophecy, which is to overthrow Macbeth. Even though Shakespeare’s tragic hero Macbeth commits heinous deeds throughout the entire drama, he is unfairly influenced by several elements within the play. For instance, I blame not only Macbeth, but also the characters of Lady Macbeth, the witches, and the three apparitions for his tragic downfall. Because Macbeth chooses to take the lives of Banquo’s lineage, many literary critics and readers may disagree with the opinion that he is not solely responsible for the evil occurrences. Macbeth, being unable to realize the threats pointed towards him, paranoid, and believing that others distrust him to think irrationally, leads to the responsibility of other characters’ influences. Macbeth’s ambition is to remain king for as long as possible and he will kill anybody who stops this from happening. Macbeth feels as if he was given a childless rule, and that his legacy will not continue on in fears his rule will be taken away by someone outside his family. Lady Macbeth also forces her own will upon Macbeth, calling him a coward to prick at his sides. The threat of being considered a coward in the eyes of his lover is more important than the problems anf implications of committing a murder. Macbeth values his self worth and personal gain than the life of his friends and allies. The murder of Banquo is what ultimately leads to his demise, says Lowe. Macbeth’s guilt takes the form of a ghost, coercing Macbeth into admitting his involvement in the murder of Banqou. This leads to the separation of Macbeth’s troops, whom later come to kill him in the final act. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s relation is an irony throughout the play, as most of their relation is based on greed and power. This is different from most of Shakespeare’s other plays, which are mostly based on romance and trust. There is also guilt that leads Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to the final consequences of the play. As the progresses, the constant changes in Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are exposed.

Throughout the play we are able to see the change Macbeth has encountered. He started out as a noble thane, content with his life. But as soon as the Three Sisters' have gotten the notion of Power in his head, we see his thrive for power ultimately corrupting him. By studying the impact power has on relationships in Macbeth, it is obvious that Banquo and Macbeth's relationship best represents the impact which the need for power can have on a relationship. This conclusively demonstrates that lust of power can drive people to doing the cruelest things in order to capture it.
