What is the power elite model? According to the American sociologist C. Wright Mills to describe a relatively small, loosely knit group or people who tend to dominate American policy making. This group includes bureaucratic, corporate, intellectual, military and government elites who control the principal institutions in the United States and opinions and actions influence the decisions of the policymaker (The American Heritage® New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition). I do believe that the American political institutions are controlled by the rich and powerful. If you take a look at our political parties and the people who run for high office positions there is something they all usually have in common they are wealthy and or come from wealthy families. Now you don’t have to run for office to have political power in America sometimes you can just donate a lot of money to a campaign and support a candidate. Another example of how the rich and powerful run the American political institutions is when billionaires supplant political parties; candidates are beholden directly to the billionaires. And if and when those candidates win election the billionaires will be completely in charge (New Study Proves U.S. Is Controlled By Rich and Who are they to say they work harder then people who are not wealthy they are in no position to determine that. What gives them the right because they have money they can do whatever they want. Now that’s not always the case because some accumulated their wealth because it was handed to them by their wealthy family. I don’t believe they deserve to have power because of this reason. The government in the United States supposedly revolves around American ideals such as equality and diversity; however, this is simply not the case. The meaning of democracy has been skewed in the United States to represent something entirely different than it did in 1776 when the country was founded. Today, our democracy behaves more like an aristocracy, where the upper class exercises power within the government and state, influencing discourse and therefore the laws and resources in our country, purportedly “for the people”. Most of the political power was in the hands of the businessmen as they had the money to donate to the campaigns of politicians. The federal government was essentially a tool for the wealthy. One instance of political corruption happened with the election of William Andrews Clark. Clark made his fortune from copper and was one of the wealthiest men in Montana. Clark wanted to become Senator of Montana and bought his votes by paying workers to vote for him. In conspiracy theories, the elite represent the individuals and groups who have power. This small population has access to a large amount of money and resources, giving them an advantage over anyone who lacks this access. The elite can represent the conflict between high class versus the low and working class. Also, the government and any governing leadership can be considered the elite over the rest of the nation. This distinction will be important when discussing why people invest in conspiracy theories.
Power elite: a. A small group of people that have high influence and power in society.
The elite theory is the belief that a select, powerful few make all of the decisions in America. The Americans trust in these elite to make the decisions for them. “It is just that the people are of necessity confused and must, like trusting children, place all the new world of foreign policy and strategy and executive action in the hands of experts” (C. Wright Mills, 78). To prove his elite theory Mills makes the claim that Americans are rather uneducated in the fields of government. We the people require someone above us to run things smoothly while also keeping in mind the public wants and the greater good. Someone that holds more knowledge will make better decisions for America.
Inequality exist and is high in America because the amount of income and wealth that is distributed through power. In America the income distribution is very inequality and the value of a person wealth is based on their income with their debts subtracted. “As of 2007, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 34.6% of all privately held wealth, and the 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 50.5%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 85%, leaving only 15% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers)” (Domhoff, 2011). In contrary the poor do not get ahead and the rich get more. Americans are judged and placed in class categories through their home ownership which translates to wealth. Americans social class is often associated with their assets and wealth. “People seek to own property, to have high incomes, to have interesting and safe jobs, to enjoy the finest in travel and leisure, and to live long and healthy lives” (Domhoff, 2011). Power indicates how these “values” are not distributed equally in American society. Huge gains for the rich include cuts in capital gains and dividends and when tax rates decrease for the tiny percent of Americans income is redistributed. Taxes directly affect the wealth and income of Americans every year.
These pluralistic interest groups are free to operate and lobby in the political arena, fighting against the majority and other competing factions for voice in Congress. With the influence of multiple factions operating throughout the political system, a balance of power is created (Kernell 2000, 429). This is much like the international theory of sovereign states balancing each other’s power to create a political system that focuses on stability, yet is always in a constant flux of power. With this in mind, special interest groups are constantly contending for power by raising money, campaigning, and lobbying in Congress. When a special interest group is threatened by a competing policy, the group will organize efforts to balance, or transcend the power of the competing group.
America’s upper class has been getting richer since the past three decades, and we have still not found a way to stop this. We have been unable to find a way to distribute America’s wealth equally, so we can have a decent lower class and a good middle class. Inequality has caused many people to struggle in various ways, but their is alway another side to the story.

Also, they belong to the same organizations. The power elite have the power to control programs and actions of important governmental, financial, legal, educational, national, scientific, and public institutions. The ones in power influence half of the nation’s manufacturing, infrastructures, transportation, banking possessions, and two thirds of all insurance possessions. The occupants take essential actions that could affect everyone’s’ life in American society. Rulings made in meetings of significant corporations and banks can influence the rates of inflation and unemployment.
This can be seen in the criminal justice system to support their claim. The upper class or 1% passes laws designed to benefit themselves. These same laws are detrimental to the working class. Both groups commit acts of deviance, but the system the finically wealthy created defines deviance differently for each group. The criminal justice system judges and punishes each group differently. In addition, the elite can often afford expensive lawyers. Members of the working class generally do not have these same advantages which then usually causses ciaos and deviance within society.
The structure of power in society is a vital part of understanding sociology. The two main theories that differentiate this structure are Mills’ theory of a power elite and Riesman’s contrasting theory of veto groups, or pluralism. Both theories are often found in varying degrees when considering important public decisions, such as the Hoover Redevelopment Plan or the University Village Plan. Generally, one of these theories is more applicable and relevant to certain public decisions and developments depending on the issue. While both of these theories played a part in the Hoover Redevelopment Plan and the University Village Plan, the power elite theory is ultimately more responsible for the institution of these developments.
