The world is shrinking. The technical term for this change is “Globalization.” Distance is becoming more and more irrelevant with each passing day. A neurosurgeon in the United States can direct a real-time brain surgery halfway around the world, in India, via a camera and a monitor. The modern era is one that is dominated by a growing technology industry. People have devices in their pockets with more computing power than that which was required to land a man on the moon. The internet can connect practically anyone anywhere with anyone else anywhere else, as long as they have semi-decent reception. Technology is improving in nearly exponential leaps and bounds, and with this growth comes new forms of communication and, consequentially, commerce. The Foundation of E-Commerce The term ‘e-commerce’ basically means ‘business on the internet.’ It is has been developing since, or nearly since, the dawn of the online age. The roots of e-commerce can be traced back to the days of the Second World War, where messages were transmitted electronically (St. Xavier’s College, 2014). The first of the four is Virtual Merchants. A Virtual Merchant generates all or nearly all of it’s profits using websites. However, what a Virtual Merchant saves by not having a physical location, they could easily lose if they don’t grow quick enough. Any company that wants to run entirely on the web needs plenty of advertising, among other things, to get going. Most shoppers already have sites that they are familiar with which they will use primarily, and only 5-20% of shoppers will be switched to a new site (Morrison, 2014). Any Virtual Merchant needs to be a solid business from the get-go, with easy and fluid accessibility and userability, as well as sufficient and consistent customer
