Unemployment has fluctuated throughout the United States history and has hurt the economy in many ways. Unemployment can be defined in many ways, however, unemployment is best defined as someone who is actively looking for a job and is unable to find one. When a person is unemployed it effects the economy, society, and that person’s life. Unemployment is the best way to measure how our economy is doing. The most used measure to determine how our economy is doing is the unemployment rate. There are three main types of unemployment. First is frictional unemployment, this is when someone is between jobs. Second, there is cyclical unemployment; this is when someone loses their job due to a recession phase in the business cycle. These effects include living standards, mental health, tension at home, and being social. More effects of unemployment are crime and the rate of suicides. In a study done by Dr. Carlos Nordt, of Zurich University’s Psychiatric Hospital, it showed that a society with a recent increase of unemployment will see an increase in crime rates. Unemployment can make people go to extreme measures to get what they need to survive. As stated previously, there are times when people can become depressed and vulnerable, causing them to not think straight and attempt or commit suicide. The formula for finding the unemployment rate is the number of unemployed divided by the labor force. The labor force is made up of both employed and unemployed. Every month the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor takes a survey. Of about 60,000 different households each month, one-fourth of those households are surveyed. No one household will be surveyed for more than four consecutive months. The data for the survey is conducted by highly trained employee’s of the Census Bureau. The survey is done over the phone or in person. The members of the household are asked about their labor force activities or their non labor force status. When an employee is collecting this information from a household they will take into consideration the characteristics of the individual; the individual’s age, sex, race, education level, and marital status.
