Tourism provides the individual to have an opportunity to experience things and to live, momentarily at least, extraordinary lives. For many people, travel is an escape from their everyday lives. It’s something that most only get to do maybe once or twice a year, or for many more people, even less often than that. Therefore, it’s through travel stories, photos and videos, that help feed that desire to travel to somewhere new.

Travelling is one of the only ways for an individual to experience something completely different to their usual norm. When we travel to somewhere new, we will come in contact with the locals, immerse in the culture and endure activities that you would normally not find back home. This could be due to the fact that we are away from the people we subconsciously fear judge us the most, whether it be people from work, family or friends or the excitement of a new location, but travel allows us to forget about that fear and be more carefree. From this we are able to momentarily forget about our problems and live extraordinary lives. We become more aware of what we say and our actions because the repercussions, positive or negative, seem to contain more personal responsibility. Although it can be frustrating, confusing or we may even feel alone, these uncomfortable feelings allow us to strengthen our internal relationship. Some may travel to pursue freedom or escape from their normal lives and temporarily live extraordinary lives with no disturbances. As part of the tourism experience, Caruana and Crane (2011) note that freedom ‘gives meaning to tourism practices and accounts of self-identity and suggest freedom is an essential quality of learning while in the tourist mode. When the individual returns from a trip, they are never the same person they were before travelling. If the reason for travelling was to escape their normal lives, the individual will come back refreshed and clear minded. If the reason for travelling was to explore different cultures, the individual will come back with a new perspective as all the challenges and experiences would given the tourist a chance to get a better understanding of, and maybe even, empathy for, that society.
