In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird courage is depicted through many character’s and comes in many different forms. Courage means the ability to do something that frightens one. There are many characters that embody the meaning of courage and these characters are Boo Radley and Atticus. Atticus and Boo Radley consistently demonstrate courage throughout the story as they encounter the deceptions and rumours brought upon by the inhabitants of Maycomb. Both characters demonstrate that courage is the ability to do good in the face of danger or adversity.

Atticus is not similar to the other fathers of Maycomb. He values good morals instead of physical strength. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage …show more content…

She also makes some considerably negative comments about Atticus’ position in the trial. Throughout all of this, Atticus’ behavior towards her remains unchanged. He recognizes the good in Mrs. Dubose and even goes as far to call her “the bravest person I ever knew” (Lee, 149 ). For Atticus to approach the situation from a different perspective takes real courage. In part two of To Kill a Mockingbird, word gets out that Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a negro man that has been charged with the assault and rape of Mayella Ewell. Along with the forthcoming of the trial there are plenty of comments in regards to Atticus’ position on the trial. Atticus is well aware that he will not win the trial, yet this does not lead him to giving up. “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee, 101). Although Maycomb folk do not see eye to eye with Atticus’ position in the trial he does not let that impact him. Instead he takes on the trial and does so because he believes in Tom Robinson. He believes that despite Tom being a Negro man he has every right to be innocent.
