Nestled between countries of Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia, sits the constitutional monarchy Thailand. The country’s population of sixty seven million plus, ranking twentieth in the world, cannot compare to the three hundred million and more that occupy the United States. A comparison as this may suggest employment more readily available in Thailand than the United States; less people correlates to less competition. In fact, the Central Intelligence Agency stated an individual residing in Thailand was ninety percent less likely to be unemployed paralleled to the United States. Out of the seventy-two living languages that occupy Thailand, Thai is the language predominantly used by the native people. (Ethnologue:Languages of the World) Thais are very congenial and humble people; they laugh easily and speak softly. Thais are very proud of their cultural heritage and they do not shy from telling any foreigner that Thailand has never been ruled by a Western power. The wai is the official Thai greeting and it is a show of respect. . This unique greeting is performed by putting your palms together and close to your chest as you take a bow. A wai is never used to greet children, in this situation, one would just nod and smile in response to a child Thais are very personal people, more so than Americans - and their personal bubble is smaller than an America 's, however Thais do not prefer one to touch their head. Thailand has a system of health beliefs called Thai Traditional Medicine, which the material and knowledge has been passed down generation to generation orally. Thai Traditional Medicine is comprised of old-style philosophies and based sturdily on the principles of Buddhism. It is safe to assume Thai Traditional Medicine is a holistic and natural approach to health care. According to Thai Traditional Medicine, illness can be caused by the supernatural, power of the universe and nature, or kimijati; which could be the equivalent to germs or parasites in modern medicine.
