Synopsis
In the Ted Talk, “My stroke of insight”, the speaker Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroanatomist had undergone a stroke affecting her left hemisphere. During this process she was able to experience her brain deteriorating slowly and she was able to study it. She explains how she wanted to become a brain researcher because of her brother’s brain condition, schizophrenia. During the TedTalk she also explained her whole experience, including what it felt like, her emotions, and the world around her while having a stroke as well as the difficulties that she had encountered. Jill explains this experience as a tremendous gift.

The textbook mentioned how it is possible to live with one side of the brain (Lilienfeld et al., 2016). However, I was still a bit confused on this concept because I have always thought that you need both hemispheres working together to function properly. As I watched the TedTalk, I was further able to change my understanding of the concept that you can live with one hemisphere, you would just lose some functions associated with that hemisphere, as Jill explained (Taylor, 2008). Not only that, but from the textbook I never understood how you would feel without one of your hemispheres not functioning properly, I personally thought that you would lose some abilities and it would be difficult to survive. However, the TedTalk changed this understanding of mine because, like Jill, although she lost some functions, she lost all her stresses, and she felt peace, as she states, “So here I am in this space, and my job, and any stress related to my job - it was gone. And I felt lighter in my body. And imagine all of the relationships in the external world and any stressors related to any of those - they were gone. And I felt this sense of peacefulness” (Taylor, 2008). It gave her a whole new world and it never occurred to me that this could happen, so it really expanded on the knowledge obtained from the

She has origins in nutritional science and has worked across FMCG and multiple organizations dealing with media, charities, and pharmaceuticals. Ramsey was also the Global Director of the Dove Self-Esteem Project at Unilever in London. Her TED Talk, “Why Thinking You’re Ugly Is Bad For You” occurred in September of 2014 at TED@Unilever in London. The audience that Ramsey is trying to target is the parents of young men and women who are struggling or may begin to struggle with body image/low self-esteem. She speaks to the parents directly about what can be done to minimize the use of the internet and social media at such a young age. Ramsey’s talk is affected by the audience in the sense that she uses

From the vast and varying array of “TED Talks,” situated on multiple topics, Kenneth Robinson’s speech explores and questions an argument understandable to students in an everyday educational environment. More in depth, English author, speaker, and advisor on education, Sir Kenneth Robinson confronts and challenges the modern day academic school system killing creativity. Robinson argues that; hence, “We are educating people out of their creativity” (Ken Robinson). Kenneth questions whether students, or in other words, future leaders and world changers are being subject to guidelines and rules put in
Scientists are on the brink of doing the unthinkable-replenishing the brains of people who have suffered strokes or head injuries to make them whole again. If that is not astonishing enough, they think they may be able to reverse paralysis. The door is at last open to lifting the terrifying sentence these disorders still decree-loss of physical function, cognitive skills, memory, and personality.
The main difference between Sarah’s life before and after the accident involved normality; therefore, one of the brain’s main functions may be to ensure that life is as normal as possible. As shown in Sarah’s life before the accident, people usually do not have to think about performing seemingly simple tasks, such as reading the newspaper. In Sarah’s post-accident case, however, she could not recognize the words on a left side of a book that she was reading to her daughter. Due to damage from the injury, a once simple task for Sarah is now a challenge. Another major theme identified in the book related to brain function is that the brain is involved in a variety of tasks, such as motor movements and coordination, sensory information, and learning. This is evident in Sarah’s life before and after her injury. For example, due to Sarah’s left neglect, she could not recognize the position of her left side of her body for walking, and she also could not see the left side of her body. For brain injury, Genova indicated that damage to structures of the brain affects function. Since Sarah’s left side of her body was affected, her right hemisphere was damaged (i.e., the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body and vice-versa). Today there are many defects acquiring as well as up rising in the academic field as teachers and parents alike teach a student and aid the needs these students need. The entire Ted talk is presented by RSA animation an interesting format not at all the usual Ted presentation. As well as not the only Ted presentation, Sir Ken Robinson has presented. As Sir Robinson conveys his thoughts and studies his words guide the animation in a very impressive visual. Sir Robinson will be conversing about three troubling trends: rising drop-out rates, schools' dwindling stake in the arts, and ADHD. RSA animation successfully presented a visual presentation simple and complicated at the same time that vividly guides the viewer on a journey with Sir Ken Robinson as the tour guide.
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor gave a moving lecture on how she became who she is. To introduce herself, Jill informed the audience about her life choice of becoming a neuroanatomist, who studies the brain for the reason inspired by her brother’s diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Working as a supporter for the National Alliance for Mental Illness alongside her scientific career, she researched about severe mental illness, which led her to many questions, mainly asking, “how do different brains works for different individuals with different conditions?”. Jill then had the chance to answer this question on her own. She was struck by her own brain disorder, hemorrhage, which occurs when a blood vessel is discharged, and in her case, it was an explosion in her
The TED talk by Philip Zimbardo was very thought provoking. He was a witness of the Abu Ghraib jail prisoner harassments during the Iraq war. He shared graphic images of what occurred in those torture chambers and it really made me doubt humanity and it’s morality. He believes the military police were put in a position by the interrogators to perform evil acts against the prisoners as an intimidation tactic. He also conducted the Stanford prison experiment where he sort of mirrored the events that took place at Abu Ghraib jail. He asked for volunteers and made sure they were mentally fit. He made half of them the officers and half the prisoners. The prisoners were humiliated and abused, he actually had to end the experiment early because several of the volunteers had mental breakdowns. Rhetorical Analysis on “The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie In the TED Talk, "The danger of a single story", Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explains her views on why a single story of a culture or place could be misleading. Adichie is a skilled speaker who was able to convey her message to the audience through rhetorical devices such as pathos, ethos and various elements of figurative language, such as metaphors and anecdotes from her childhood to now. To add on to that, Adichie’s overall tone was informal, which helped the audience easily connect with her stories. Throughout her speech, Adichie mentions the metaphor “single story”, but each time, it had varied meanings connecting to her primary objective of convincing the audience of the negative effects of cultural ignorance and stereotyping.
In Scotland, summer of 2012, Melissa Marshall spoke at a TED Talk titled “Talk Nerdy to me”. In this short and direct speech, she illustrated to the audience the importance of being knowledgeable of what was occuring in the scientific field. Coinciding with that, she said that scientists should want and need to make that knowledge accessible and comprehensible to the public. In her mind, it would be beneficial to everyone if scientists involved the public in discoveries about great issues in our world such as health care, the environment, energy resources, etc. In order to build a bridge of communication, Marshall outlined some general tips for scientists and engineers on how to better bring the public into their wonderland.
As shown in the 1994 documentary, Freedom on My Mind, the story of Freedom Summer resonates today in many ways, but especially in its horrifying portrayal of evil. Many people would like to think that evil is separate from themselves, that it is inconceivable that they could take part in the atrocities of the past. However, the events of that summer in 1964 display the insidious nature of evil and how it can creep into even the most level-headed of humans’ mentality. Mercifully, the story of this summer doesn’t only depict evil, it depicts good as well. It depicts what humanity needs to avoid and to constantly be striving for.
In June of 2011, Conan O’Brien gave the commencement address to the 2011 graduating class of Dartmouth College. O’Brien uses humor and anecdotes to deliver a powerful speech which resonated with most viewers. O’Brien also used many literary devices for the graduates to better understand his primary points. Conan O’Brien delivery of his commencement address was effective because of his use of pathos, ethos, and antidotes, which contributed to his fantastic speech.
Nowadays, it is widely known that the right and left hemisphere have different functions. The two hemispheres are equally important in a daily life basis. Nevertheless, in the 1960’s this was not common knowledge. Even though today the importance of the brain hemispheres is common knowledge, people don’t usually know to whom attribute this findings. One of the people who contributed to form a more defined picture about the brain hemispheres and their respective functions was Roger Wolcott Sperry, with the split brain research. Roger Sperry did more contributions than the split brain research, but this is his most important and revolutionary research in the psychological field. Thanks to the split brain research, Sperry proved that the two hemispheres of the brain are important, they work together and whatever side of the brain is more capable of doing the task is the hemisphere that takes the lead.
Brian Little, an award-winning psychology professor explains the science behind personalities in his Ted talk, “ Brian Little: Who are you really? The puzzle of personality.” He is a professor at Cambridge University and his students often describe him as, “A cross between Robin Williams and Einstein.” Brian wrote the book Me, Myself, and Us: The Science of Personality and the Art of Well-Being. Brian uses his degree in psychology and the acronym OCEAN to explain the different characteristics of personalities in his TED talk, “Brian Little: Who are you really? The puzzle of personality.” In his Ted talk, Brian describes how the acronym OCEAN applies to the science of personality. He says, “ So “O” stands for “open to experience” versus those
