Technology in Schools In today’s society, students have access to technology in a classroom setting. “Jeremy Posey, the mathematics coordinator for the National Math + Science Initiative, defines education technology as any tool that can be used to help promote human learning, including – but not limited to – calculators, tablets, Smart Boards, video cameras, digital cameras, MP3 players, Portable Digital Assistants (PDAs), and, of course, the computer” (Posey). Although, having technological advantages can be proactive for learning, these tools can also be distracting. Matt Richtel, journalist for the New York Times states, “Students have always faced distractions and time-wasters. But computers, cellphones, and the constant stream of stimuli they offer, pose a profound new challenge to focusing and learning”. It has become more common for school districts to distribute tablets or computers to each student to accomplish school work. There are many issues with giving a student free rein while in class to research or complete an assignment. The kids have the ability to search anything they desire, and after a period of time they get uninterested and scroll through Twitter, Instagram or other social media sites until the class is over. This survey does not include students who have boundless use of technology in a class room setting. Putting screens in front of a child in order for them to learn is extremely difficult on both the educator and learner. This takes away the importance of reading a book or learning how to write. Even though times have changed, it is still crucial for children to not miss those growing years of a storybook before going to bed or silent reading while in class. Cursive, let alone handwriting has become the lost art of this new generation, because everything is typed out on a Word document.
