In Zimbabwe, the biggest conflicts Darling faced were hunger and poverty. However, in the U.S., Darling’s major conflicts were based on adapting to a new country, new family, new friends, and constantly home sick. She grows to see her home and its people differently because of how she is living in the U.S. She grows to see the U.S. differently because in Paradise it was completely different and in the U.S she has everything that she didn’t have in Paradise. In Zimbabwe, Darling was naive and innocent, whereas in the U.S. Darling is more experienced and simple. Through the conflicts of childhood, Darling changes to become more civilized and working to be able to attend college. Uncle Kojo gets home from work and tells Aunt Fostalina “he wishes when he comes home there will be a Hot Food served like other wives do”. After TK was sent to Afghanistan, uncle Kojo was fine at first, and then he wasn’t. He just wants to be on the road that’s why he was given the nick name Vasco da Gama. Doctors recommend him to stay home for a while. Aunt Fostalina Exercises to lose weight, and doesn’t cook hot meals because she is always on a diet. It’s not only leaving your country it’s also starting from the bottom, learning how to speak a different language, to dress, to have manners, and education. Also adapting to a new family learning how they are and tried to adjust to their life style. Even dough deep inside you can miss home and your immediate family, this new country is giving you a second chance and the opportunities that you didn’t have in your Country and also the chance to become someone to attend College. Maybe if she stayed in her country things could of gone wrong to her like what other young girls went thru, rape and end up pregnant at a young age or maybe even be dead, others weren’t given the opportunity to leave Paradise and Darling had that opportunity everything happens for a reason and she was chosen, maybe she won’t be able to go back or even never because of her legal status but as she grows up and becomes more mature and hopefully becomes someone meaning receives a college degree or even becomes a Parent, she will realize that coming to America was the best thing that happen to her and God chose her because she is a great kid she is different from
