Independent Reading: Divergent
Veronica Roth created the book "Divergent". Everyone was separated into five independent factions: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On a special day when one must choose a faction they want to stay in, Beatrice decided to leave her faction and live the life of a Dauntless even though she was a Abnegation (46-47). She was noticed by everyone as soon as she joined the dauntless faction, due to her being the first one to jump into a pit which is one of the tests that dauntless initiates must take. She labels herself as “Tris”, and makes some new friends. Will, Albert, and Christina are quick to become friends with Tris. As she has friends she also has some enemies: Peter and Molly. Before they can officially be called a dauntless, they are told that they must go through 3 stages of tests. The top ranked person is to choose whichever job he or she wants and to determine who is top rank they will be assessed as they go through each stage. The first stage is physical combat, Tris and her comrades help each other but Tris is ranked near the bottom almost being cut from the competition.
The term "Divergent" means that a person was able to pass for multiple factions. This shows that the divergents contain human like qualities irrelevant to other people in the book who possess just one trait. In the book, Divergents are supposedly dangerous to the world and are seen as a threat to the higher ups. The author of this book seems to be trying to relay that because humans are so dynamic, there are constant arguments happening resulting in conflicts.

...antly alter your life and how you have lived thus far. Beatrice’s choice of leaving her former faction and going into Dauntless has completely changed her whole life. If she had not chosen to go into the dauntless faction, she may have never been able to save the brain dead soldiers of dauntless. Choices are what people face in their daily lives and Veronica Roth displays how important each and every choice we make is.
The ending of the book was somewhat already assumed seeing how closely intimate Tobias and Tris were. There were some surprises as Tris’ family came into play in saving her and eventually resulting in Tris saving the whole dauntless faction. Her foreshadowing of Eric teaming up with the Erudites to form a rebellion was pretty obvious but I think that it still gave a big “wow” and entertained me as much as I could possibly ask for from a book.
Renowned American music artist, Kanye West, has recently announced himself as a candidate to contest the 2020 election for President of the United States of America. West is “a proud non-reader of books” and for a man aiming to become one of the most powerful heads of state in the world, this is a horrendously ignorant view to have against books, which open questions and detail important knowledge. There is cause for concern, as his views regarding printed stories in general, alarmingly resonate with those depicted by society in Fahrenheit 451; a dystopian novel written by Ray Bradbury in 1953, which takes the reader into a world whereby firemen are employed to burn intellectual contraband we call books and technology dominates all aspects

The Divergent Series is a novel by Veronica Roth that is set in a sort of dystopian future society that in actuality is Chicago that is being used like a type of experiment. You basically get sorted into these groups called factions where you will live out the rest of your days. But if you choose to leave you will become factionless which is the equivalent of homeless presently. You take a test to decide which faction you are best suited for. Once you have chosen you go through an initiation process. If you choose the faction you weren’t born into you can’t contact anyone from your old faction.
The main character in the book Divergent is a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice is developed throughout the book by having to do things that push her out of her comfort zone. Beatrice was born in the faction of Abnegation, where everything is simple and alike. Abnegation values selflessness, but Beatrice doesn’t feel like she is selfless. She decides to change to the faction of Dauntless, who values courage. Beatrice has to do things like jump off trains, and fight people to show she is courageous. She decides to start going byTris, because Beatrice won’t fit in with the dauntless. When Beatrice makes the decision to be a dauntless she says “My fathers eyes burn into mine with a look of accusation’. This is because it was selfish of her to choose to be a Dauntless. Beatrice doesn’t like to be told what to do, and will stand up for what she thinks is right. Beatrice tries to be kind to others, but sometimes she just can’t control herself.
Can one Choice define you? In Veronica Roth’s dystopian novel, Divergent, that is just one of the questions that will have you searching for answers. Roth will have you questioning your personal social role on society after you read her novel. The novel follows the point of view of the protagonist, tris Prior, who must decide on faction to join and pledge allegiance too for the rest of her life. There are five factions total. Read how the choice of allegiance, living with the choice, and the outcome of the choice all show key elements in social critic as Veronica Roth brings to life her dystopian novel The Divergent.
Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
The ending is not expected at readers do not think that Winston would have been captured. Readers feel pity during the ending. However, there is a very strong voice throughout - creates intensity and creates impartiality
Everyone in the factions has a place, everyone has one genetic trait, all except the divergent. In the book Divergent there are five factions, each faction was made up by one personality trait. The traits were Abnegation (selfless), Amity (peace), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (brave), and Erudite (intelligent). After taking a serum that stimulates the brain to produce simulations in which the different simulation eliminated one faction. The main character Tris ( originally named Beatrice Prior) did not eliminate four factions but had an inconclusive result, as she only eliminated two factions out of the five possible factions. It is later revealed that the factions were created within a fenced city to protect it from the outside. The outside is full of constant violent war; this is caused by damaged genetics that causes th...
... mother, whom she has always known to be a part of a separate district all her life. But her mother explains the true origins of where she came from which sends a wave of confusion over the reader and main character. Stories require great character depth and description which Divergent offers throughout its storyline.
I did not like the ending of the story. I found that the ending was very predictable and anticlimactic, especially when all the tension was being built up throughout the rest of the book. When I was nearing the end of the book I was already starting to envision the ending of the book and when I got to the end I was disappointed to see that I was correct. I would have preferred if the ending was more of a cliff-hanger and ended completely different than anyone would have expected.
This author believes that humans strive to maintain goodness but our prideful desire for power leads us to take the shortest route to gratification. Divergent demonstrates both our ability to do right and our inability to sustain goodness without strong restraints on our desires. This is why societies must maintain rules and punishments in order to try to sustain our goodness for as long as possible.
A dystopian novel, such as Brave New World, is usually centered on the conflict between man and society. In this case, Aldous Huxley tells three compelling viewpoint from John the Savage, Bernard, and Helmholtz. Though each is distinct in their upbringing, each share the same path. While in the World State, each try to reach a level of satisfaction by their standards. Helmholtz, an intellectually superior Alpha, hopes to create compelling works of literature and spread his wisdom, whereas Bernard merely seeks social acceptance. And John the Savage, having been shunned by his community at the savage reservation and mother, aspires to find a sense of belonging in the new world. Each, however, meet the same fate; failure.

In the book Insurgent by Veronica Roth, setting is one of the most important and influential aspects of the story. The setting of a book or story is one of the most important things to the reader as it allows them to imagine the environment surrounding the characters. It creates a tone and an attitude which change the way the reader feels as they continue further into the writing. Roth is able to use the setting of Insurgent as a parallel to the book’s plot and her character’s emotions which helps the reader relate to them. The setting foreshadows most of the plot and helps to develop the characters/factions through small amounts of symbolism.
Beatrice and Hero are both wonderful and intriguing characters. They develop in interesting ways and they represent two extremely different views of society and what it was like to be a woman in those patriarchal times.
