Cloe Madanes once said psychotherapy is the art of finding the angel of hope in the midst of terror, despair and madness. Cloe Madanes was born in Argentina in 1945. She studied psychology and became licensed twenty years later. After that, Madanes became associated with the Mental Research Institute in California, and her work was strongly influenced by her mentors Gregory Bateson, Salvador Minuchin, and Milton Erickson (Madanes, 2004). In 1976, Madanes and her ex-husband, J. Haley, established the Family Therapy Institute of Washington, DC. Madanes belongs to the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. In 1996, she was awarded the Egner Foundation Award for Distinguished Contribution in the fields of philosophy, psychology, and anthropology and the California Psychological Association 2000 Award for Distinguished Contribution to Psychology (Annals of the American Psychotherapy Association, 2002). Cloe Madanes takes interest in preserving children’s rights and the prevention of family violence. Mayor Gavin Newsom presented her with an award in 2005 that recognized her advocacy on behalf of children (Cloe Madanes :: Curriculum Vitae, n.d.). Cloe Madanes and Anthony Robbins formed the Robbins-Madanes Center for Strategic Intervention back in 2000. The goal was to assist in resolving issues with clients’ professional and personal lives by using social sciences and psychology. “Strategic intervention strives to address the needs of all members of a family, community, or business while providing therapy and other intervention services in a shorter period of time (Cloe Madanes Biography, 2013)”. By the individual’s family being apart of their therapy session, it shows how much their family members care for them and want them to get help with whatever issues they may be having. This is very important because it is a sign of love and it is showing the support that they have for one another. Therapist have also found that during strategic family therapy, they can help all family members with helping to encourage each other as well as create rules and interactions that are psychological healthy for all family members who are involved. It will make it easier for the family members to all get along and understand each other. When one person in the family is having issues, the other members should take the time to talk to one another and help each other out, especially the family member who is in need of help.
