Craftsmanship can mean a wide range of things to various individuals and was one of the most punctual routes in which man has communicated him or herself to others, whether it was through hole drawings or hieroglyphics. It doesn 't start or end with simply drawing or painting, things normally considered craftsmanship, or the numerous other perceived features of workmanship including design, dramatization, writing, chiseling, and music. My research is based on Vincent van Gogh art, and two art paintings that I choose to study is The Starry Night, 1889, and the second art is The Sower 1888. Additionally, Lie placed tall trees in the foreground of the painting to give a sense of the scale between the observer’s perspective and surrounding objects. Furthermore, Lie used dark, cold colors, such as purple, blue and black, to depict the feeling of a winter’s afternoon. Lie also used snow on the ground as an obvious indicator of the time frame in which the painting is occurring. However, in contrast to the dark cold colors used, Lie also used subtle hints of orange, yellow and red to show that there is some presence of light in the piece. The background of the painting is a sheen of yellow, suggesting the presence of light and the forming sunset.
The use of color originally struck me as bland. The use of reds and oranges overwhelmed me to the point where I was trying to focus on other colors in the painting. An artwork will consist of different elements that artists bring together to create different forms of art from paintings, sculptures, movies and more. These elements make up what a viewer sees and to help them understand. In the painting Twilight in the Wilderness created by Frederic Edwin Church in 1860 on page 106, a landscape depicting a sun setting behind rows of mountains is seen. In this painting, Church used specific elements to draw the viewer’s attention directly to the middle of the painting that consisted of the sun. Church primarily uses contrast to attract attention, but it is the different aspects of contrast that he uses that makes the painting come together. However in her interpretative poem she found a perspective of the painting that connected with her. As she used every stroke of darkness painted into the canvas an opportunity to have it symbolize this darkness and evil that resides in the world. It told her story and her experience of a starry night. Similarly Van Gogh had used every stroke of light painted into the canvas to be a symbol of beauty, and a symbol of his fascination of the night sky and its illuminating lights. He uses swift movements of his brush to depict a sky that seem to be able to sweep the mind away from the frustrations of this world in to the dreamy night light. When we hear the word “Art” certain images come to mind. We think of great masterpieces of epic battles, and cathedral walls depicting angels and demons. This however, is a very small part of the art of the world. One form of artwork has been seen in every civilization, on every continent; Folk art. Folk art at its root is art including paintings, textiles, furniture, and carvings done by a country's indigenous people. These pieces are often functional, and serve a purpose on top of being aesthetically pleasing.The techniques used by these people are often passed down generation to generation, and originate in the community itself. This means most of the artisans do not have any formal training in their craft. Many took apprenticeships, or learned from watching village elders.
All aspects of nature such as the ocean, beach, vegetation, trees, sky, and man-made objects create an interesting combinations to create a nature scene of the Sunshine State. The light blue-gray sky create an atmosphere for the viewer that they are in a warm climate. The dark green and lighter green trees and shrubs are colored in such a manner to depict the harsh sun on the beach. The taller trees and shrubs are dark and shielding the viewer’s standpoint from the sun. The smaller vegetation on the left side of the painting are lighter colored which express their exposure to the sun. There is a balance in the painting that is directly affected by the painter’s ability to have you imagine the size of objects and the position of the sun. The artist uses good asymmetric balance. There is a very busy scene on the left side of the painting as the people are abandoning their ship that is ashore. The right side of the painting and the main focal point is the vegetation and the towering palm tree. The tree and vegetation give a sense of calmness and beauty. The French 1884 oil on canvas painting The Song of the Lark by Jules-Adolphe Breton draws grasps a viewer’s attention. It draws an observer in by its intense but subtle subject matter and by the luminous sun in the background. Without the incandescent sun and the thoughtful look of the young woman, it would just be a bland earth-toned farm landscape. However, Breton understood what to add to his painting in order to give it drama that would instantly grab an onlooker’s interest.

This painting by Vincent Van Gogh is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum, in the Impressionism exhibit. There are many things going on in this painting that catch the viewer’s eye. The first is the piece’s vibrant colors, light blues and browns, bright greens, and more. The brush strokes that are very visible and can easily be identified as very thick some might even say bold. The furniture, the objects, and the setting are easy to identify and are proportioned to each other. There is so much to see in this piece to attempt to explain in only a few simple sentences.
Van Gogh had sympathy for the peasants and furthered his passion for humanity. He studied them non-stop to explore their world. The color palette he chose was dark and crudely painted on, almost grungy. It’s a low-lit kitchen area, with the look and feel of exhaustion that the dark color palette engages the viewer to feel what is going on.
In conclusion, Van Gogh used the elements above to create a man by himself in a field. He used color to represent feeling rather than represent realism of an event. The cool colors represent the field and happiness in his work. The warm colors represent the harshness of the day and could be a metaphor for life. He used scale and proportion to emphasis the overbearing sun. He also used proportion and scale to represent literally and figuratively how far away home was. The linear perspective was only evident to me after I really studied the used of lines. I followed the lines to the horizon and left side of the painting.
I am comparing my favorite painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh to The View of Toledo by El Greco. Both paintings are beautiful landscapes featuring the night sky. This type of painting uses linseed oil as a binder in the paint. Oil paint is very slow at drying which allows the artist to come back the next day to make corrections to the painting without putting fresh paint on the canvas. Giving the artist more control over these types of paintings than others. Most of the artists that use oil paints use thin layers of what is called glaze to build up the color on the painting. Oil paintings also make it easier to add texture to the art work as well. In the Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh uses oil paints to create this master piece. He also uses abstract which is where realistic things look unrealistic giving them different forms as well as colors. This painting was completed in 1889. While both these artworks are very different, they have some similarities.
