I. Company Profile Starbucks is a #1 specialty coffee retailer in the United States. Worldwide, the company operates about 5,400 coffee shops in a variety of locations (office buildings, shopping centers, airport terminals, supermarkets). Outside of North America, Starbucks has 900 coffeehouses in 22 different markets. The first foreign coffee house was established in 1996 in Tokyo, Japan. By the end of 2001, the company will have approximately 400 stores in Japan, and a total of 815 stores in the Asia Pacific region. Starbucks has 32 stores in Britain, and over the last two years it has opened stores in Austria, Spain and Germany and has plans to expand into Greece and Italy. Stores in southern China and Macau are scheduled to open in late 2002. Starbucks is also exploring opportunities in Latin American, including in the countries of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. At the same time they should be selling franchise right for the coffee carts. This will provide an increased cash flow as well. During all of this Starbucks should be looking at coffee producers who are in financial trouble or are looking at selling their farms. This has to be done discretely as not to cause unnecessary bad press. After they run a couple of these coffee producing farms for a few years they should be able to see how the whole operation works and determine its viability. Once it’s proven viable they should send out simultaneous offers to the biggest producers as to catch them and other coffee companies off guard. Starbucks also should be getting into the bottled Frappuccino as soon as possible. They should leave the introduction of the product up to Pepsi because of their past experience. They should leave their entry into the grocery store market until some of these other strategies are implemented. This will prove to be the best strategy for Starbucks being able to reach their long-term gaol.

Schultz has had a lot of success with Starbucks, not only in revenue, but he has continued to expand the brands in their portfolio, increase store locations and reach new highs. Starbucks is now an international company with more than 21,000 stores in over 65 countries (Starbucks Coffee International, n.d.). Starbucks believes their global success has a lot to do with their international partners. Schultz explained it nicely when he said, “We remain highly respectful of the culture and traditions of the countries in which we do business. We recognize that our success is not an entitlement, and we must continue to earn the trust and respect of customers every day” (Starbucks Coffee International, n.d.).

Starbucks opened with two main goals, sharing great coffee with friends and to help make the world a little better. It originated in the historic Pike Place Market of Seattle, Washington in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker. The creation of Starbucks’ name came from the seafaring tradition of early coffee traders and the romance evoked from Moby Dick. At the time, this individual shop specialized in the towering quality of coffee over competitors and other brewing services enabling its growth to becoming the largest coffee chain in Washington with numerous locations. In the early 1980s, the current CEO Schultz saw an opportunity for growth in the niche market. After a trip to Italy he brought back the idea of a café style environment of leisure and social meetings to the United States we now see in Starbucks locations today. Schultz ultimately left Starbucks to open his own coffee shop, Il Giornale which turned out to be a tremendous success. Fast forward a year later, Schultz got wind that Starbucks was going to sell all their components of Starbucks including their stores and factories, he immediately acquired the funds to buy Starbucks and linked both operations. Preliminary Starbucks – one of the fastest growing companies in the US and in the world - has built its position on the market by connecting with its customers, and creating a “third place” beside home and work, where people can relax and enjoy themselves. It was the motto of Starbucks’ owner Howard Schultz and, mostly thanks to his philosophy, the company has become the biggest coffee drink retailer in the world. However, within the new customer satisfaction report, there are shown some concerns, that the company has lost the connection with customers and it must be taken some steps to help Starbucks to go back on the right path regarding customer satisfaction. I will briefly summarize and examine issues facing Starbucks. Starting from there, I will pick the most important issue and study it from different positions.
