The human species has developed a great deal of genetic disorders. Most disorders can impact an individual mentally, physically and occasionally, both. Although, many genetic disorders cannot be cured, multiple treatments may take place to manage the developed issues caused by the disorder. Depending on the condition, the life span of the individual could range from death before birth to the average age expectancy for a human. Spina Bifida, also known as “Cleft Spine”, is the most frequently diagnosed permanent birth defect in the United States (“What is Spina Bifida?”). Different levels of intensity categorize the multiple levels of this genetic disorder. Although this defect cannot be cured, there are many treatments that can take place to attempt the ability to embrace a traditional existence.
Discovery
There is a long history behind the discovery of Spina Bifida. “The history of Spina Bifida traces back almost 12,000 years ago” (“The History of Spina Bifida”). In Amsterdam, between 1618 and 1652, after Professor Nicholas Tulp studied a grouping of symptoms, he provided people with the phrase “Spina Bifida” (“The History of Spina Bifida”). In 1761, an Italian named Giovanni Battista Morgagni, associated hydrocephalus with lower-limb deformities (“The History of Spina Bifida”). “Hydrocephalus and infections were the root cause of deaths for those born with Spina Bifida” (“The History of Spina Bifida”). Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. It is a birth defect in which a developing baby's spinal cord fails to develop properly. The term Spina bifida comes from Latin and means "split" or "open" spine. This disorder occurs when the fetus is growing in the womb and its spine doesn’t form correctly. Some of the vertebrae don’t close to make their normal ring shapes around the spinal cord. This defect happens at the end of the first month of pregnancy, when a baby's spine and spinal cord are developing. Causes of Spina Bifida Causes that cause this disorder are low levels of the vitamin folic acid during pregnancy. Not having enough folic acid in the diet before and during early pregnancy can increase a woman's risk of Spina bifida and possibility of other neural tube defects. A high fever during pregnancy may increase a woman's chance of having a baby with Spina bifida. Some evidence suggests that genes may be a cause of Spina Bifida, but most babies born with Spina bifida have no family history of the condition. Also, women with epilepsy

The human genome is a remarkable system composed of over 3 billion DNA base pairs that encode for the characteristics that makes people distinctly human and unique themselves. Without the genome’s nearly flawless ability to self-replicate the human species would cease to exist. As incredible as this replication methodology is, it is not without its faults. Genetic mutations, though rare and typically harmless, can strike at any time and in various ways. Still, when they do cause harm the effects can be profound and impossible to ignore. Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) is an instance where the mutation of just one nucleotide has devastating results. The Mayo Clinic defines progeria as a progressive genetic disorder that causes children to age rapidly, beginning in their first two years of life. This study defines the disease of progeria by outlining symptoms and identifying causes that lead to its diagnosis. In addition, treatment methods and extensive research that give those affected by the disease hope for a brighter future are highlighted.
