Space travel has a variety of benefits that are both direct and indirect. The main goals of space travel will help us have a more in depth understanding of the universe, learn more about our own planet and potentially slow global warming by finding another habitable place or harnessing outside resources. However, there are also benefits in that the technology we develop to get to space in turn could provide more sustainable energy, better consumer products and even increased global communication. Although these may seem like great reasons to do human space missions, there are also some drawbacks. Ultimately, I believe that space endeavors are better left to robotic missions for the time being. The Space Race was successful in that the goal of reaching the moon was achieved. This race also allowed the United States to advance past the Soviet Union. Some may think these accomplishments were worth the risks and the costs, but others feel that we wasted money and risked and lost lives that shouldn’t have been put at risk in the first place. The costs of the Space Race were far greater than the motivations and benefits.
Being able to send people up into space was an extraordinary influential event for mankind. It told us that there were whole new worlds and concepts out there ready to be explored. The fundamentals of the solar system led us to discover more about the gravitational pull of the sun and other planets, which has helped aid us in launching probes and even setting the course for the International Space Station. Fundamentals like microbial life on Mars and the exotic environments of planets and moons have driven space exploration to a whole new level. In this article, Lind devotes most of his time arguing of why human spaceflight should end. He provides very little evidence for any benefits of using robotic probes. He does describe a few examples of where they are going, but he doesn’t give any information on what the advantage is of using robotic probes rather than humans. Lind has a very sarcastic tone in this argument, and he doesn’t give enough credit to the astronauts. In conclusion, I believe that this article is not written well, and has minuscule evidence to why spaceflight should end, which ironically is the title of the article.
The space race had a great historical significance for the U.S. and the whole world. On the surface, it seemed as a battle of science and technology. In reality, it was actually a political battle between the world’s two major superpowers and their economic systems, an ideological battle between communism and capitalism. So, was the space race a waste of time? Could all those millions of dollars have been better invested in something else? Maybe, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that the space race stimulated research in many fields, and this research brought to many life changing developments. LED therapy to treat cancer, freeze-dried food, and the memory foam used in mattresses all resulted from the technologies developed by NASA for space. The recent events regarding the NASA Mars probes have renewed the debate of reinstalling manned space missions with the objectives of exploring and landing on foreign worlds such as the moon and the red planet Mars, rather than the use of solely robotic craft and machines. It is my belief that we should return to the days of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, those of manned lunar landings and manned space exploration. Robots simply cannot and should not be allowed to be the sole means of visiting these worlds, nor should humans only be able to witness new findings second hand through the use of computers and machines. It is human nature to be normally curious of one’s surroundings, and it is important that we send one of our own to new worlds. The effects that past missions have had on the world’s people, as well as our political and cultural climates are another valid reason for flesh instead of metal to lay claim to space. Also, the limitless applications and new education that manned flights can bring to us from on site human interactions could lead to another technological and industrial revolution like the original lunar programs had done for us during the Gemini and Apollo programs.

Some may think exploring outer space is simply a human’s curiosity.
