Social Problems in Education and the Family Over the past 50 years, social values regarding how we think about education, how education is done, and who we educate changed. With change, new social issues emerge and the change in education is no different. This paper focuses on the dropout rates, education inequality, and educating immigrants. However, through the changes and emerging social problems, America is resilient and there is hope and suggestions to minimize the current concerns.
Where has the last 50 years brought us
Since 1950, it is more acceptable for females to attend college, education’s value is higher for employers, and forced integration of the 1960s is gone. In 1972, Congress passed a law giving genders equality in schools and by the end of the decade females attending college started to outnumber their male counterparts (Macionis, 2015). Employers are now placing great value on education, to the point where there is discussion if they value it too much. …show more content…

The wealthy continue to invest in schools and education for their children, adding extracurricular trips and educational experiences, at their expense. “On a national scale today, per-student funding ranges from about $6,00 in a poor community such as Nampa, Idaho, to almost $20,000 in a high-income community such as Arlington, Virginia” (Macionis, 2015, p.390). Private and charter schools have developed for those that have the ability to pay, as well as out of school programs that increase the student’s chances at increasing grades, like Sylvan Learning programs. School in the poorer communities needed to be funded to a standard, giving the student a chance to an education after secondary school. The funding would come a form of subsidy or grant, either funded federally, through the state, or a sharing of funds within school
